Breed Notes 17th May 2019 Margaret Deuchar

NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS

The first day of Birmingham National was Thursday which was Pastoral Day; it was their 160th Anniversary show with every exhibitor receiving a very nice pen. The show also schedules every breed with CCs. Rather like Welks Ch show  the weather decided to break the night before, with heavy rain and some thunder, unfortunately in many areas this lasted into the following day, making the trip to Stafford not very pleasant, particularly on a weekday with the increased traffic. The show started 9am but we were in after Newfoundland’s and not before noon, which helped.

Our judge was Lynne Smith who as Lynne Robson with the Alkola affix, was a successful breeder and exhibitor of Buhunds in the 70s and 80s. She bred Ch Alkola Llian who in the ownership of  Wenna Walbank won 17CCs and was the bitch record holder for a number of  years. Ch Alkola Moonraker was the 5 Ch owned or bred by  Lynne who was top breeder in 1983-5. She also gives CCs in German Spitz Klein & Mittel and Japanese Spitz, and last judged the breed at Driffield in 2016. Here she found her BOB & DCC his 5th (all with BOBs) he also has7 RCCs in Sarah Stonton’s Ch Arnscroft In Di Ana Jack, by Ch Arnscroft Di To Be A Sailor x Ch Arnscroft Di Or Comply. All shows have groups for BOB and if there are SB classes which are sponsored by the KC, then there is a SB group with prize money, at Birmingham there are also BP and BV groups. It was great to have qualifiers for each, and what made it even more special was the fact that our secretary Jenny Shorer-Wheeler, is also on the Birmingham committee and does the announcing for the groups, so the breed was always announced positively. All the working groups were first but as there was some food left over from the picnic,we had after the breed judging, that severed as tea and Birmingham also provided tea and coffee beside the BIS ring, so  we were well looked after. The first group was SB with Lisa & Eris, I first met Lisa some years ago when she introduced herself to me at DD in London, she said she had an unregistered Buhund and did some agility, very quickly she found herself in our Obreedience team with Loki was on the working register, the rest as they say is history. Eris is her first show dog and she has had a great start to her show career, they have been to 6 shows and this was the third time in groups, where under Keith A W Young who gives CCs to 13 gundog breeds, she was G4 and won £10. The next group was for the BOBs here the judge was Zena Thorn-Andrews who gives CCs to every CC breed, she gave Jack his 3rd CC, and here shortlisted him here in a very large group. The puppy group judge was Dr Tames Jakkel from Hungary who is president of the FCI.The puppies were pre judged going into the BIS ring when the Pastoral Group had finished. Immediately after they were lined up Dr Jakkel shortlisted which included Time, he then went over 3 puppies that had not made the pre judging for one reason or another, but he did not add any of these to his short list. He then moved the puppies again and to our delight awarded Time G4.It was then the veterans turn in the big ring, they had also been prejudged by Richard Kinsey, Veryan although not placed put her best paw forward and certainly flew the Buhund flag. With modern technology Our Dogs broadcast the Groups and BIS live which was fantastic, many of you know that my other breed is the Norwegian Elkhound, in fact we only lost our last one in November 2015, so to be able to watch the Elkhound puppy be BPIS live on line was very exciting.

Two new exhibitors who joined us for the first time at Birmingham were Penny and Tom Glibbery with Indy, it was lovely to see them and I gather they have entered Indy at some other shows which is great news. They were also pleased to say hello again to Fizz, who was partly instrumental in convincing them they wanted a Buhund, when we met them DD a couple of years ago. Tom you will remember from previous notes has run the Paris and London Marathons this year, and tells me he will be running the Berlin one later in the year, when Indy is older he will be joining Tom on some of his training runs and they might even end up competing  Cani- Cross together.

Across the Irish Sea the at Hiberian All Breed Ch show the Minforst Buhunds continued with their winning ways  where judge Mrs M Finney, Brenda & Tony Bethell’s Ir Ch Zodiac’s Featuring Fredrik at Taevas of Minforst (IMP US)(Ir Jun Ch)(CW19)(Freddy) by Am Ch Hundehaven’s Captain Voyger x Am Ch Zodiac’s Gracious Gretchen gained his10th Green Star and was BOB. GSB her 6th Brenda and Tony’s homebred  Minforst Galadriel (CW19)(Ella) by Freddy x Int/Lux Ch Arnscroft Di Ola. She only needs one more GS to be an Ir Ch.

I finish with the lovely news that Lillian and Michael Rumsey’s Ch Arnscroft  Di Nah May(Anja), is now a therapy dog, and had her first assignment at Kings College Cambridge, where she met the students pre exams, she had a great time and met some wonderful students.
