NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS
Those of you that read these notes regularly will know that I am a fan of Bu Bumbles as a way of Buhund owners in various areas keeping in touch with each other socially, and where those interested in the breed can join a Bumble to learn more about them , before putting themselves on a puppy waiting list.
I am therefore very pleased that the first activity I am writing about in 2023 is a Bu Bumble held on 2nd January, and below Millie Lambert tells us about it-: “Having had to miss the last SW Bu Bumble, held at Shearwater Lake near Warminster, Wiltshire, I decided to try to arrange one for the New Year! Thankfully I picked the right day as the weather was perfect -even if a little chilly! We had a reasonable turn out, considering several were unable to join us due to being away or at shows. We ended up with 7 people,7 Buhunds and 2 Non-Bu’s (one mixed breed and a Silken Windhound). The walk was busy, with lots of people around the lake, but the dogs behaved impeccably. A few were off lead for much of the walk, which is aways good to see! It was quite muddy in places, but the dogs cleaned themselves off in various streams, so no one was too dirty! Those that came were Jacque and Michael Cobb with Angel and Bear, Mary and David Dosson with Teddy, Sue Crocker with Noor and daughter Tissy and Charlie the cross breed and Kim Ainsworth with Ellie an elder daughter of Noor, then of course there was me with King and Kai my Silken Windhound. We had a great day, and enjoyed lunch and a chat at the tea rooms after the walk. We are looking forward to the next Bumble, which may be in Wales!” Thanks Millie great way to walk off perhaps some indulgences over the festive period! and as the participants said a fun day with a beautiful venue great company and a lovely café.
Boston and District Canine Society Ch dog show was the first Ch show of 2023, the society was formed in 1948 and was given Ch show status in 2007.Their first Ch show was held on the Newark and Notts show ground, in 2010 it moved to the East of England Arena on the E of E showground; the building was relatively new at that time. The show began with the breeds that have CCs at every show but has gradually over the years they have added other breeds, and it now runs over 4 days and is a qualifier for Crufts, as entries for Crufts now do not close now till after Manchester Ch show. In 2011 Boston added Buhunds which was great news, as having lost Manchester (at that time) it gave the breed a Ch show between LKA and Crufts albeit without CCs. I am sure you all know that this is the last year that Boston will held on the E of E showground .The committee of Boston & DCS has said it is excited to announce that next year it will be at Rutland Showground ,with an increased CC allocation and will be taking over the East of England Ch show dates, so hopefully it will be held in the sunshine ! but it also says it is very sad at the loss of a general Ch dog show as with the demise of the East of England Agricultural Society of which the Dog show was a part , the dog show can no longer continue, so it is the end of an era for a show that began at the beginning of the 1960s.We had CCs there until they were moved just before the pandemic .We also competed in two Obreedience competitions that were held with the show, and for many years my Fizzy also competed in an agility show that ran alongside the Ch show, so many happy memories. The last Ch show that went was Leicester back in 1992. Although Boston will increase its CC allocation there must I would think, be an overlap of CCs with some of the numerically large breeds so it will be interesting to see what happens, it will not of course affect us as we do not have CCs at either show.
This year Pastoral Day was the Saturday and we were first in the ring at 9am.A couple of exhibitors live locally a couple stayed locally and others left at silly o’clock, it was just getting light as we drove into the carpark! In the past the show has suffered cold weather and even snow but this year it was relatively warm if a trifle wet at times. Our judge was Tom H Johnston who has judged all over the world and gives CCs in 83 breeds across all the groups. Later he judged the Hound Group which was also on Saturday. He found his BOB &BD in Jenny Shorer -Wheeler’s Ch Koromandel Tusen Takk(ai)Muchly he is by Trollheimens JR Made for Cascilius x Sturtmoor’s Eezee Luuva. He was continuing his winning ways having been Top Buhund last year. BPD and BP. Jacque and Michael Cobb and Nancy Kent’s Leggatts Dakota at Knytshall (Tobi) he by Ch Rikarlo Gable JW (Time) x Knytshall Noor Ul Ain (Noor).BB was Michael Patrick and Leigh Ashman’s Tapui Starla (Freya) by Ch Koromandel Best Served Cold at Knytshall x Ch Kimura’s Vera with Tapui (Imp Nor).RBB Lisa and Alex Strong’s Leggatts Dancing Queen at Draccus (Eris ) she is by Frostisen Winsome x Noor. Special Beginners Nicolas, Jo and Bethany Guillod -Rees Draccus Obsidian (Ruby) she is by Time x Eris and was shown by daughter Bethany. Later in the day Muchly won some petrol money for Jenny by being 2nd in the Good Citizen Stakes under Joe Smith.
Remember Crufts entries close on 23rd Jan (postal entries have already closed). We are first in the Ring on Friday 10th March. Hall 4 Ring 16.
I finish with the news that it was a very sad end to 2022 for Chris Maynard who had to say goodbye to her Knytshall Black Orloff, taken far too young but cancer sadly is never a respecter of age and is the biggest cause of death in dogs worldwide.
Stay safe everyone.
