Breed Notes 15th December 2023 Margaret Deuchar

NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS

The weather over the weekend 2nd /3rd December was very mixed with those living in the north having really heavy snow in some places, but in the south and west it was very cold but not much snow, which enabled Mary Dosson with her and husband David’s Kligenthal Bran Mak Mourn (Teddy) to head off on the Sunday to the Bristol and District Dog Club Open Show, held at the Hutton Moor Leisure Centre, Weston Super Mare, where under judge Stuart Byrne (Toveri) Teddy was BOB and PG2.BB & RBOB was Sue Crocker’s Leggatts Jive Talking( handled as always by Jasmine Freeborn). Stuart has Finnish Spitz and gives CCs in them, Elkhounds, Pharaoh Hounds and Ibizan Hound, he is also Chairman of the Nordic show which of course is hosted by the Finnish Spitz Club and was show manger this year.

You will of course know by now that LKA (Ladies Kennel Association) Ch show has moved to Bingley Hall on the Stafford Showground. The move had a mixed response, it is a KC All Breed Ch show giving CCs to all the breeds that have them, and as I understand it, they wanted to move to 4 days and the NEC was just too expensive. For some it meant the show was nearer for others further away, which was the case for us and of course some groups were on weekdays which does not please everyone, although for us Pastoral Day this year was the Saturday 9th. From my point of view and quite a few others, the car park was free and not so far to walk, you had to arrive really early at the NEC to get anywhere near the halls, and once in there it was usually a long walk to our ring, on the down side the car park at Stafford is mostly grass, and I heard that there was a tractor on duty from 10am to pull cars out if they were stuck in the mud. The show was laid out more or less like other Ch shows held there with most of the trade stands on the balcony. It was a benched show with plenty of chairs and the halls were warm, but only the main ring was carpeted, there were also a number of attractive Christmas trees in evidence, and a very Christmassy area where you could take photos of your dogs regardless whether they were winners or not, and there were even small cardboard Christmas trees on the judges’ tables, and many exhibitors supported Christmas jumpers . We were first in ring 13 at 9am which was in the main hall, the early start meant several stayed locally overnight, I had booked a room but sadly my car decided to have a catalytic converter problem four days before the show, and the garage could not have it in till the following Thursday, so although I could still drive it, with the warning light on, I did not think it was sensible to drive two and half hours each way on the M1 and M6 with the risk of breaking down, and I gather the driving conditions were very unpleasant with heavy rain and high winds. In the end I felt I was there as Kirsty videoed the dog classes, Jenny the bitch classes with Nancy doing the BOB, thank you ladies. Our judge was Darren Clarke giving CCs in the breed for the first time, he gives CCs in 21 other breeds in the Pastoral Group and 4 breeds in the Working Group. He last judged the breed on 13th July 2019 at the Club Open Show when it was held in conjunction with National Working and Pastoral Breeds Ch show. He found his BOB & DCC his 11th he also has 4RCCS in Jenny Shorer-Wheeler’s homebred Ch Koromandel Tusen Takk(ai)JW(Muchly), he is by Multi Ch Trollheimen JR Made For Cascilius x Sturtmoor Ffascination With Koromandel. RDCC his first Lesley and Liz Butterworth’s homebred Kligenthal Einar(ai)(Ruskin) by Klovn Yggdrasil V.Koekie’s Ranch x Ch Koromandel Gild The Lily(Hildy).BCC her 5th she also has 4RCCs Kirsty Irvine Blackcombe Bodil At Tapui (Bodi), Kirsty imported Bodi from Australia in May 2022,she was bred by Roberta Crouch in Australia and is by Aus Ch Kynon’s Urban Legand(Imp Can) x Nor/Aus Ch Rennedal’s Brynhild Skoldmoy(Imp Nor).It was a good day for Lesley and Liz Butterworth as Ruskin’s dam Hildy (Ch Koromandel Gild The Lily) won her 4th RBCC she also has 3CCs,and is by Ch/Can Ch Kyon’s Bold Norseman x Ch Maidofcopper For Koromandel JW (Imp Fin)(Piika). With these wins Muchly ends the year as ‘Our Dogs’ Top Buhund and he and Bodi are Top Dog and Top Bitch in the club points, congratulations to you both.

BP Andrea and Andrew Platts Mazads Joie de Vivre (Luna), this was her first Ch show as she is only just 6 months having been born on 27th May, her only other show where she went to get some ring experience was at a local rescue charity show near where she lives, there she was BP and RBIS. She is by Kligenthal Almuric x Gladidegelli Arvejente for Rikarlo (ai).It was lovely to have a puppy in the puppy group again after a gap of a few months with no puppies.BV Jenny’s Ch Maidofcopper For Koromandel JW (Imp Fin) (Piika), she is by Multi Ch Gnipagrottens QU x Multi Ch Cipacan Mila Magia, and has 16 CCs &12RCCs.Piika has a great legacy in the breed as all the Green Card winners (except for Bodi) and the BP either have Piika as their dam, grand dam or great grand dam.

Young Bethany Guillod-Rees and her parents Johanna and Nicolas had to be at Stafford even earlier as the Junior Handling classes began at 8. 30am.Bethany was 4th in the 6-11yrs age group handling her and her parents Draccus Obsidian At Bucamereru (Ruby),she is by Ch Rikarlo Gable (JW) x Ch Leggatts Dancing Queen At Draccus.

Later Muchly handled by Kirsty won the AV Good Citizen Stakes judged by Jane Lilley winning folding money.

The Pastoral Group was the first to be judged under Ben Reynolds Frost with congratulations going to Jenny and Muchly for making the short list. Albert Wight, who gives CCs in Buhunds was judging the Working Group and before he started judging he was given an award, as he was judging his 100th group.

I finish with some very sad news, in the early hours of 10th of December Mike John passed away, the family of course are known for their Alaskan Malamutes, but they have also been part of the Buhund family for years with daughter Char having her first Buhund 22yrs ago, and they still have a Buhund. Char and her mother Christine both give CCs in the breed, Mike was always very supportive and a very popular dog person and will be greatly

missed in the whole dog scene, especially in the West Country where the family live. We send condolences to Chris, Char and the whole family.

Stay safe everyone. Margaret Deuchar  margaretdeuchar@gmail.com
