Breed Notes 21st July 2023 MArgaret Deuchar

NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS

Every Group has its own Open and Ch show, although the Working Group & Pastoral Group combine to have an Open show in February at Ryton on Dunsmore in Warwickshire, and their Ch show in July on the Three Counties showground Malvern, this year it was on Saturday July 15th.Both have their own group with only the winners of both groups going head-to-head for BIS. The groups combine as historically all the breeds were in the Working Group until the Group became so big that it was spilt in 1999, when the dogs that were associated with herding went into a newly formed Pastoral Group. Unfortunately for anyone who also has a Hound to show their Ch Show is on the same date at Stafford, which does present me with a problem as although I no longer have an Elkhound to show, I am on the Elkhound Committee, so I had to give my apologies.

Mind you last year I missed our open show which was held in conjunction with Leeds Ch show as I had covid!

The KC like clubs to have their open show in partnership with a Ch with the view that this will help the entry of the partner show, which certainly happened this year. From our point of view, it saves on competitors travelling and expense, also on the cost of putting on a show although we do have to pay our partner show, so depending on how much they charge the saving can be minimal.

This time last year we were having a heatwave, and it was quite difficult to keep the dogs cool, not so this year, the Friday before was cool, very wet, and windy, the torrential had stopped by the Saturday but the wind had picked up, and we were told the day before that all judging would be indoors. We were in the ring after 42 Finnish Lapphunds going in about 11.30am. Our judge was Paul Conway who last judged the breed two years ago at our open show when it was partnered with Bath Ch show. He gives CCs in 5 other breeds and was giving CCs for the first time in Buhunds. He found his BCC & BOB in Kirsty&  Alex Irvine and Callum Gillies Ch Blackcombe Bodil With Tapui (Imp Aus)(Bodi), this was her 4th CC having won her crown at SKC while still in Junior she also has 2RCCCS,she is by Aus Ch Kyon’s Urban Legend, (Imp USA/Canada) x Int Ch/Aus Ch/Nor Ch Rennedal’s Bryhild Skjoldmoy(Imp Nor).RBCC her second Sue Cocker’s Leggatts Jive Talking (Noodle) she is by Sturtmoor Floki x Knytshall Noor Ul Ain and funnily enough has the same birthday a Bodi, she was handled as usual by Jasmine Freeborn. DCC his 9th my and daughter Debbie’s Ch Rikarlo Gable JW (Time)by Ch Koromandel Best Served Cold At Knytshall x Ch Kimura’s Vera with Tapui, he also has 7RCCS.He gained his crown at this show in 2021 the first Ch show for us after pandemic, and it was so hot! Many many thanks to Kirsty for showing him as Debbie had to work. RDCC his 2nd Konner Owens Leggatts Night Fever who is Noodle’s litter brother he was handled by Millie Lambert -Dovey . BV Jenny Shorer- Wheeler’s Ch Maidofcopper For Koromandel JW (Imp Fin) (Piika) she has 15CCs and 12RCCs, she is by Swe/Nor Ch Gnipagrottens Qu x Multi Ch Cipacan Mila Magia. She was later shortlisted in the veteran group under Darren Clark.Best Special Beginners Nick & Dr Jo and Bethany Guillod -Rees Draccus Obsidian at Bucamereru(Ruby) by Time ex Leggatts Dancing Queen At Draccus. Ruby had a busy day as the show also hosts the semifinal of the Junior Handling Association competition, with classes 6-11yrs and 12-16yrs, this replaces the semifinal that used to be held at Richmond Ch show. Bethany and Ruby were in the 6-11yrs class at 830am coming 5th.It was great have 2 Buhunds in the handling classes as Izzy Collier handled Piika in the 12-16yrs also coming 5th, the judge was Helen Taylor -Morris.

Our judge at the Open show was Caroline Friend-Rees who gives CCs in 18 breeds over 3 groups, she should have judged our open show at Leeds last year but like me went down with Covid. The main winners were:

BD & BIS Jenny Shorer -Wheeler’s Ch Koromadel Tusen Takk (ai) JW(Muchly) he is by Multi Ch Trollheimen JR Made For Cascilius x Sturtmoor Ffascination With Koromandel. RBD Time .BB BOS & RBIS Michael Patrick &Leigh Ashman’s Ch Tapui Starla by Ch Koromandel Best Served Cold At Knytshall x Ch Kimura’s Vera with Tapui. RBB Bodi. BV Kirsty Irvine’s Ch Kimura’s Vera with Tapui (Imp Nor) by Nor Ch Kimura’s Per Gynt x Nor Ch Kimura’s Nelly (Betty). After the show Caroline asked to join the Forum, and then wrote saying she had really enjoyed her judging and had always loved the breed and had apparently owned one many years ago. She went on to say she felt very lucky to have had such a fabulous entry and with so much quality to choose from, which was lovely to hear.

I will give more details of the Open Show in next week’s notes, but before I finish this week, I want to thank Jenny for all her hard work in organising the show, printing the catalogue and numbers and getting little prizes for all the dogs and sweets for the owners!

The next day was Evesham & District Canine Society Premier Open show, which was held on the same venue and had Buhund classes as often owners stay on, as we did on a couple of occasions before the pandemic. Jenny and Kirsty stayed this year. Michele Coulbourne judged the breed awarding Sturtmoor Ffascination With Koromandel (Fable) BOB with Bodi gaining a third place. He also judged the Pastoral Veteran Group which Piika won gaining her Veteran Warrant, she then went to be RBVIS under Paul Eardley, so definitely worth staying on for. Muchly made the first cut out of 36 in the JW heat but not the last one which would have seen him through to the JW semifinal in October, with the final at Crufts, but there are two more shows with JW heats which Muchly can enter.

Stay safe everyone.
