Breed Notes 22nd Spetember 2023 Margaret Deuchar

NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS

Many many thanks go to Lillian Rumsey and husband Mike for attending the Dog Lovers Show in Glasgow on behalf of the Buhund Club. The show was advertised ‘as the ultimate destination for all dog enthusiast, whether   a seasoned pet owner or just starting out, the show has something for everyone. Our meet the Breeds feature is the perfect opportunity to learn about each breed’s history, temperament, and characteristics and discover which breed may be the best fit for you’.

Lillian writes, “the show was held at the SEC Glasgow, on September the 9th & 10th. It was a lovely hot sunny weekend, and it was an indoor event! We arrived at 9am to set up the Norwegian Buhund Booth, with the show opening at 10am, we had Darcy Buhund with us as breed ambassador on the Saturday, and on the Sunday, we were joined by Asta, Michael baby Eyja and their Buhund Ingo. We were busy even before the show began with many of the stall owners coming around to see the dogs. ‘Never seen one before’ or ‘never heard of the breed’ was the favourite saying of most people. Many were smitten by the Buhunds winning ways and smiles. Several people came back to ask more questions and get more cuddles. The show is held yearly and is all about dogs, a kind of mini version of Discover Dogs in London. The main stage had a varied programme, some of which we managed to catch, Dancing with dogs, Flyball, Agility, Hoopers and Geese herding which is a huge favourite with the children. There was a large variety of stalls selling all things dog and of course plenty of food stands, with the ice cream stand being particularly popular. We all had a great if tiring time. Darcy and Ingo were invited over to have a Canine Massage session, which I think they quite enjoyed. The event was very well run, and parking was literally on the doorstep for exhibitors. It was an honour to represent the breed. Buhunds in Scotland are very few and far between. I think they made a great impression.”

Darlington Ch show is one of the KC All Breeds Ch shows with our set of CCs being moved from Driffield Ch show in 2019. The show started in 1860 when a dog section was included in the Darlington Horse & Foal show. From 1884 the show was held under KC rules and in 1891 the show was held for the first time in South Park Darlington, with the show receiving Championship status in 1900. In 1909 the Darlington Horse and Dog show held an anniversary show. Then came the war years and in 1955 the show restated after several changes of title, the show was again granted Championship status in 1969 and in 1986 the show became the Darlington Dog show. Due to renovations of the South Park in 2005 the show moved to the beautiful setting of Newby Hall, but after a very wet summer when a large part of the showground was flooded, the show moved to Ripon Racecourse in 2013 and has gone from strength to strength. It is a completely outdoor show under long marquees, with the in /out rings and I am glad to say kept benches this year.

Our judge was Shelley Franks (nee Ticehurst) who with Hazel Lamb bred and showed Buhunds with the Cresscombe affix in the 1980s.Her best known Buhunds were probably Ch Wolfen Amber Prince of Cresscombe JW, who was Top Puppy in 1983 and Buhund of the Year in 1984, he was by Ch Adoram Dalhas ex Cresscombe Whisky Mac of Wolfen. Alkola Thomasine Moon of Cresscombe JW who was top puppy in 1984 and Cresscombe The Drummer Boy JW who was top homebred dog 1983. We were third in the ring after 54 Newfoundlands and 17 Polish Lowland Sheep dogs.
