NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS
Manchester Ch show is the second Ch show of the year and being one of the KC All Breed Ch Shows it has CCs for the breed. The show began in 1860 and has run ever since apart from the war years and in 2021 due to covid. It has had an up and down history for the breed, when I came into Buhunds 30 years ago the show was held in the G Mex which was originally part Manchester’s Central Station, and was the Northern terminus from St Pancras, and became a Grade 11 listed building in 1963.It only had breeds with CCs as space was so limited. Parking was a nightmare, if you were there earlier enough you could use the underground car park which was a maze of tunnels originally used as sidings for trains, otherwise you had to use the local car parks. One of the ups for the breed at the show was in 2001 when Kirsty Irvine’s Tapui Tane who was just 6months and 4 days won the DCC was BOB and was G4 in the Working Group, as there was no Pastoral Group then, he was also the overall winner of the puppy stakes , the first Buhund to do this. Then came the down two years later in 2003 when we had CCs there for the last time, and after that we no longer had classes there either as the show did not schedule breeds without CCs. In 2004 the show moved to Staffordshire County Showground (with the KCs permission), and although there was more space it was not until 2016 the breed was again scheduled although without CCs, then in 2019 it became an All-Breed Show. I vividly remember going to the show in 2020 when there was talk about a very nasty virus coming out of China, little did we realise at the time that a few weeks later we would all be in lockdown.
I could not go last year as Time’s breeder was judging. This year rather than leave at silly o’clock if we were first in, I decided to book a local hotel room, of course when the judging order came out, we were fourth in! after 34 OES 47 Welsh Corgis Pembroke and 36 Cardigan Corgis. I thought about cancelling the room but as Pastoral Day was the Thursday and living only 10miles from Hyde Park Corner, and it being a weekday when the traffic would be heavy , I decided to keep the booking and I was very glad I did. As you know the whole country has been experiencing cold weather and although we have not had any snow, as we got onto the M6 toll road on the Wednesday we noticed the snow all over the surrounding area although the road was clear. Time enjoyed his walks on the snowy grass after we had arrived at the Hotel. The next morning it was very cloudy and as I walked Time the snow started to fall very heavily, so we decided to pack out bags and head for the showground in case the roads stared to be affected, but of course the snow stopped but we were then in the rush hour traffic round Stafford, but it was nice not to have to worry about the time and have leisurely breakfast once we arrived the in the very nice restaurant on the showground. Gradually everyone arrived but sadly Kirsty missed her stakes class, as her journey took much longer than expected due to snow and heavy traffic. We eventually went into the ring just after 2pm which did mean we all had plenty of time for a nice catch up with everyone which made the time pass quickly.
Our judge was Robin Searle who has been part of the show scene for many years and has given CCs in the breed 8 times previously.
