Breed Notes 27th May 2022 Margaret Deuchar

NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS

Sunday May 15th turned out to be a very successful day for Buhunds across the country at Open Shows. In the South West, Poole Canine Club’s Premier Open Show was held at Pikes Farm Nr Poole Dorset the home of Bournemouth Ch show. The breed was scheduled so Neil Hood took Dino aka Ch Arnscroft Di Nah Saw Us Rex ShCM ShCExVW out of retirement, accompanied by Geeza aka Sturtmoor Eeza Geeza At Buhcafrey and his puppy Draccus Diamond Day O’ Buhcafrey, for judge Sandie Tadd (Kricarno) who gives CCs in Pyrenean Mountain Dogs, and judges a number of breeds in the Pastoral and Working Group. Dino was BOB and PG 3 from 15 breeds, which was a fantastic result as only a couple of weeks previously Dino had been very ill, but happily has made a good recovery. Geeza was RBOB and Dayo making his show debut was BPIB and Puppy G3, and as it was a Premier show the first 4 in the groups qualify for Crufts. Breeder Lisa Strong was thrilled as this was the first Draccus puppy to qualify. Jacqui Walmsley Kerry & Fritz Frost and Addrienne Frost Treadwell’s Bunny aka Trelowen Amelia at Frostisen, won the Good Citizen Stakes class handled by Anne-Marie Taylor. The only downside of the day was that the weather remembered how to rain, so last year’s Gazebos came in useful.

Further east the Herts & Essex Canine Society also scheduled the breed at their Premier Open Show. They had a new venue, The Dullingham Polo Fields near Newmarket in Cambridgeshire. There was a change of judge from Geoff Duffield to Peter Simmons who gives CCs in Australian Shepherds and Border Collies. Marie Corin and Adam Camm’s Bergen aka Kligenthal Almuric was BOB & PG 3 from a large Pastoral Group. Jo and Nick Guillord-Rees Ruby aka Draccus Obsidian was RBOB & BPIB, so two Draccus puppies out of a litter of 5 winning BPIB on the same day delighted breeder Lisa Strong. Ruby also gained a 3rd and 2nd in AV Puppy and Junior under judge Suzy Roffey, and daughter Bethany handled her to the Reserve spot in the Junior handling class under Lee Studholme, she was the youngest handler taking part. The only downside again was the very heavy showers of rain.

Quite a bit further north Pollard Canine Society held an Open Show in Locke Park Barnsley, no breed classes, but as the show was only 5miles from home for Jenny Shorer- Wheller, she took along Muchly aka Koromandel Tusen Takk(ai), who won AVNSC Open and was RBAVNSC under Ian Sexton, who gives CCs in 5 breeds over 4 groups. Muchly is only just out of puppy so it was a great result.  Jenny’s Piika aka Ch Maidofcopper For Koromandel JW (Imp Fin) was third in a large veteran stake winning money under Marina White. Pikka is at the moment joint Top Bitch in the Our Dogs Current Leaders competition, with points gained from CCs won by her offspring up to 4th May. Here the rain managed to stay away till Jenny arrived home.

SKC is held on the Royal Highland Show ground in Edinburgh. It is one of the few Ch shows which also schedules Obedience and Agility. For many years we used to take the caravan and do all three disciplines with the Buhunds, Elkhounds and Papillons, in those days the Ch show was an outside show but in 2012 all that changed, torrential rain over night before the first day flooded many of the rings and benching areas. There are three halls on the showground the Highland, Central and Lowland so the show was moved indoors, the committee did their best but as you can imagine it was a bit chaotic. The following year the committee decided enough was enough and moved the show inside where it has been ever since, although last year due to the pandemic there were some outside rings as they ran the May show which was cancelled with the August show. I take my hat off to the committee running one Ch show must take a great deal of organisation, but to run two shows successfully together with two different schedules, particularly as the May show is an All-Breed show giving CCs to all breeds that have them, must have taken an inordinate amount of organisation. This year they had four groups, the Main group, Puppies, Veteran and Special Beginners, most were prejudged before going into the group ring for final selection. I can understand why they did this as many had a long journey home, but for those of us watching online, you had to be very careful or you missed a group, I never did see the veteran Hound group on the first day. I should not complain though as to be able to sit in the living room with a cup of tea and watch the groups is fantastic.

Pastoral day this year was the Saturday, we were second in the ring after 17 Cardigan Corgis. Our judge was Sue Bird giving CCs in the breed for the first time, she also judged the Cardigans and gives CCs in 9 other Pastoral breeds. It was good day at the office for Jenny Shorer -Wheeler’s Koromandel Kennel doing the double, with Sue Bird finding her BOB & DCC his first in Jenny’s Koromandel Tusen Takk(ai) Muchly who was continuing his winning ways, he is by Multi Ch Trollheimen JR Made For Cascilius x Sturtmoor’s Ffacination With Koromandel. RDCC his 2nd Kirsty and Alex Irvine and Callum Gillies Tapui Let’s Blaze by Ch Koromandel Best Served Cold At Knytshall x Ch Kimura’s Vera At Tapui (Imp Nor). BCC her 10th Jenny’s Ch Maidofcopper For Koromandel JW (Imp Fin) Pikka she also has 12RCCs and is by Multi Ch Gnipagrottens Qu x Multi Ch Cipacan Mila Magia she was also BVIB.RBCC her 9th Maddie Norman’s Ch Arnscroft Delilah At Veekay she is by Ch Arnscroft Di To Be A sailor x Ch Di Or Comply, she also has 6CCs.

I finish with the good news that Marie Corin & Adam Camm’s Kligenthal Almuric (Bergen) has had a clear eye test.

Stay safe everyone covid is still very much still around.
