NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS
I am sure you are all know of the Junior Warrant, which if gained means JW can be added after the dog’s name and it is given a stud book number qualifying the dog for life for Crufts, although to be honest very often the dog already has a SB number by the time it gains its JW, having won a CC or RCC, but it is still considered a prodigious award and for a numerically small breed such as ours not that easy to obtain.
The dog must gain 25 points between the ages of 6 and 18months, 3points must be won at Ch shows where CCs are on offer,3 points can be claimed for a class win BOB or BP, but 2 other dogs /puppies must be beaten. A minimum of 7 points at Open or Ch shows where there are no CCs on offer, only 1point can be claimed from these shows, but to do so 2 dogs must be present. Points can also be gained from a win in AVNSC classes but again 2 dogs must be present. A point can be claimed for BP so long as another puppy is beaten of any sex.
From the puppies born last year, Millie Lambert’s home bred and the aptly named Sturtmmoor’s Gon’n Dun It JW (Gunna)gained his JW in April and Ollie Wheeler’s Knytshall Thistle Ink It Up Koromandel JW (Inky) gained her’s in May, now Cheryl and Paul Denham-Horton’s Tapui Haraldsson At JJavacobe JW (Hogan)has gained his. He was bred by Kirsty Irvine and was born on 13th May 2024 this was the last litter born in 2024, he is by Kimura’s Harald Harfagre x Ch Blackcombe Bodil At Tapui (Imp Aus). His first 3 points were gained at LKA where under Hugh Ogden he won the PD class. He gained another point at Boston’s Christmas Premier show held on 22nd Dec at the Newark and Notts showground. Another 3points with BP at Crufts under Di Striling. He gained 1 point at WELKS under Felicity Snook winning BP.3 more points for BP at The National under Hazel Hitzgibbon, with 3 more points at SKC May show under Tim Ball where he won JD and was also RCC, no points for that though. Onto Windsor with Celia Vines judging where he was Dog CC & BOB so another 3 points. Then it was the club open show held inconjunction with National Working & Pastoral Breeds Ch show, where under Dolores Montgomery he won JD so another point. The following day at Evesham and District Canine Society show under Val Dyer he was BOB so another point. Mansfield & District Society show was held in Chesterfield the judge for AVNSC was Perter Simmons who awarded Hogan another point for winning Junior. Then it was onto City Of Birmingham Ch show where for many years we had CCs, then it was reduced to the hated one CC awarded only to the BOB, eventually this was stopped, but the show continued to schedule the breed till in 2022 when there were only 4 Buhunds entered. However, the breed has been represented most years since then and this year was no exception. The judge for AVNSC Pastoral was Dr Donald Sturz (USA)who is President of Westminster Dog show, there were 4 Buhunds entered in with Hogan winning Junior Dog, gaining another point, but for the breed it did not end there, as the breed took 3 of the green cards, with Ollie Wheeler’s Knytshall Thistle Ink It Up Koromandel JW (Inky) going BOB & BJ and BD Jenny Shorer-Wheeler’s Ch Koromandel TusenTakk (ai) JW ShCEx OSW (Muchly) with Hogan RBD. The Norwegian Buhund second Ch show of the year was held in conjunction with Darlington Ch show, the judge was Debbie Penniston Fleming with another 3 points for Hogan winning JD. His last point wasfrom Ashfield (Notts)Canine Society 2-day Premier open show held at The Hostess Mansfield Nottinghamshire, where under Gary Clarke he won AV Pastoral Junior. You will have realised that to claim a Junior Warrant involves a great deal of travelling and dedication on the part of the owner, and a dog that loves to show, even then it does not always work out. A few years ago one dog missed it by a point.
Thank you, Jacqui Walmsley, for the following report. ‘On November 8th Dorset Top Dog hosted by Poole Canine Society was held at Canford Magna, Dorset. My and the Frostisen’s Bunny aka Trelowen Amelia at Frostisen was knocked out in 2nd round, only beaten by the eventual winner of Dorset Top Dog Veteran section, a stunning Tibetan Spaniel. Anne- Marie, Dave & Mary Taylor and Addrienne Frost-Treadwell’s Penny aka Frostisen Blakk Zitter was also knocked out in the 2nd round of the Adult Section. More importantly though we had a great day, the most amazing Carvery and Crumble and spent time with local friends. The judge was Janet Drake, a Gundog Judge from the Isle of Wight’. They may not have won but great to have two representatives of the breed taking part, especially as one is wheaten and one black!
Sarah Stonton’s Pixie aka Wheatshade Dreamer is continuing her winning ways in scent, on 9th November, she won her first Level 5 Scentwork UK Trial at Elton in Peterborough. She was the only dog to find all 12 hides, a fantastic result as she is only 19 months.
I finish with a request, ‘After many years of inactivity, the new Committee of the Anglesey Canine Society is working hard to get the club up and running again -and we hope you may be able to help, with a mention of this in your breed notes’
