NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS.
Thursday 10th of September 2026 was a very sad day, it was the day that the show world changed with the closure of Our Dogs which started in 1895. These will be my last breed notes for Our Dogs, which I have written for the last 7yrs after Dog World closed, as I previously wrote for them. It was not just a paper with a hard copy and online but there were breed notes, critiques, coverage of Ch & Open shows, group photos and the live streams which was fantastic being able to sit at home and watch the groups with people joining from all round the world. This also helped put us on the world stage making the UK a place overseas exhibitors wanted to be. I am sure you will want to join with me in wishing all those that worked for Our Dogs and tried so hard to keep it going all the best for the future.
Saturday 12th saw Jacqui Walmsley head off to Exeter & County Canine Society Premier Open Show held at The Matford Centre in Exeter. The show has 332 classes 4 handling and a JW Heat. Jacqui was accompanied by Frostisen Blakk Zeta (Birdie) and Trelowen Amelia At Frostisen (VW) (Bunny), both dogs live with her, but she co-owns them with the Frostisen Kennel of Kerry and Fritz Frost, Addrienne Frost-Treadwell in Ireland. There were no breed classes but Mary & David Dosson’s Kimura’s Ola Normann (Imp Nor) Nor JCH was BOB AVNSC with Birdie Reserve BOB, not to be out done Bunny was 2nd in Pastoral Veteran Stakes and 4th in the Cinnamon Trust Open Stakes with all the entry fees going to the Trust. The judge for all the classes was Mike Turner who commented on the longevity of the Breed. Jacqui said it was a lovely, chilled day with the girls and their friend Frankie a Bearded Collie.
Pastoral Day at Richmond Ch show was Sunday 13th September. We last had CCs there in 2023 the set was taken away and given to us for a second club Ch show, but they kept us on with a very good classification, sadly though the location proved to be not very popular especially without CCs, partly because there was usually sheep on ground till just before the show with Buhunds finding it rather nice and smelly! and with rain it wwould getmuddy very quickly. The show moves next year to Stoneleigh and with a more central location hopefully it will be more popular with Buhund exhibitors, it will of course be an indoor show from being completely outside one, apparently the committee had weather and ground conditions concerns which has prompted the move. Next year the show will be held on Friday 12th November to Sunday 14th, so for us it will be between Darlington and LKA. The show is one of the oldest starting in 1895, and when I first started showing it was held on Ascot Racecourse moving to the lovely setting of Loseley Park in 2004 when the racecourse was revamped. Our judge was Lyn Salt and we were 2nd in ring 21 after Alaskan Malamutes who were also judged by Lyn, she gives CCs in both breeds although of course we did not have CCs, she last judged the breed in July 2021 at National Working & Pastoral Breeds Ch Show one of the first shows back after the pandemic, which I remember was also a very hot day. Lyn found her BD& BOB in Marie Corin & Adam Camm’s homebred Mazads Nom De Plume (Dexter) RBD was the same owner’s and Dexter’s dad Ch Kligenthal Almuric ShCEx(Bergen) BB & BV was Maddy Norman’s Ch Arnscroft Delilah At Veekay (Lottie)
I said in the notes last week that this week I would talk about the extra classes that we have a Ch shows. Brace was won by Lisa & Alex Strong’s Ch Leggatts Dancing Queen At Draccus (Eris)and her daughter Draccus I Have A Dream(Raven) with 2nd place going to the brace of the Frostisen Kennel and Anne -Marie Taylor and Jacque Walmsley’s litter sisters Ir Ch Frostisen Blakk Zitter (CW26 )(Penny) and Frostisen Blakk Zeta(Birdie) with 3rd going to Jacque & Michael Cobb and Nancy Kent’s litter brother and sister Knytshall Beau Bramble (Beau) & Knytshall Love in the Mist (Misty) then with their mum Knytshall Eloise(Eloise)they went onto win the Team class. The Special Bred by class was won by Lisa & Alex’s Raven with Jacque & Michael Cobb and Nancy Kent’s Knytshall Ragged Robin (Rowdy) in 2nd and 3rd was the Frostisen Kennel and Jacqui’s Birdie. The Special Not Bred By Exhibitor is one of those classes which is a nightmare for the steward with entries from all the different classes, to try and put in order for the judge to place. The winner was Jacque and Michael Cobb and Nancy Kent’s Ch Koromandel Best Served Cold at Knytshall (Jamie) who was RBIS 2nd was Penny who won Open Bitch 3rd was Penny’s litter brother, Jenny and David Langford’s Ch/Ir Ch/Int Ch Frostisen Zeffer (Loki) who won open dog .4th was the Frostisen and Jacqui’s Trelowen Amelia At Frostisen (VW)(Bunny) who was 2nd in Veteran Bitch and VHC was Chris & Bridget Curnow’s Draccus Yin (Magnus) who was best dog puppy. There was young man Sue, Sam Crocker & Jasmine Freeborn’s Leggatts Midnight Rambler (Norman) who came to the show at 4months and enjoyed cuddles and learning what he needs to be doing in a couple of months’ time!
