NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS
Just an update on Ch Tapui Herga (Hari), she has now finished her travelling to her new home in Australia and has settled in with Dr Roberta Crouch.
Many of you will know that the most recent Buhund to gain her Veteran Warrant is Trelowen Amelia At Frostisen, here Jacqui Walmsley tells of Bunny Wabbit’s Journey although she says she does hate that term! Bunny’s journey starts in 2017 when Sue Sercombe, Trelowen, had a litter, and both Sue & Kerry were sure they had a Wolf Sable. Kerry bought both puppies and gifted Bunny to me, with Maggit going to Emma. Bunny had to be the best Christmas present I have ever received, but you must remember a puppy is for life not just for Christmas. When she was just 8 months old she was extremely ill. I came home from work to a happy, noisy, bouncy puppy but within 10 minutes I had a puppy fighting for her life and fitting!
The diagnosis was Tremorgenic Microtoxis. Tremors brough on by a Micro toxin, best guess was she had eaten some sort of black mould. We rushed her into my Vets, Blackmore Vale Vets and then onto Ringwood Specialist Vet Centre, where she spent the next 7 days. How she survived is a bit of the mystery, both my Vets and the Specialists were amazed at her fighting spirit. She came home to me a bag of bones, with more shaved patches than fur, a slight head shake, and set about learning to walk again, as her co-ordinations was awful. At this point I really must thank all the vet staff, and my brother, who handed over our company credit card to help me pay the 5.5K bill. She also has a lot of issues, and I do mean lots! To say she barks a lot is an understatement, she can hear a flea at a 100yrds.She dislikes aerosol cans, horses, motor bikes that backfire, my neighbours but only one side! the shower, olive oil bottles (I know), empty cigarette lighters, the bin men, car doors shutting outside the house, hedgehogs, the hoover, the hairdryer, being brushed unless Birdie is also being brushed, tea towels, Andy can no longer dry up! and her latest one is bin bags, but I simply adore her for all her faults. She is such a fighter that I eventually got her back into the show ring. Lightly shown at Ch shows, we concentrated on local open shows. I am not Kennel Blind I know her limitations and even now, her front movement can be a little erratic ( I did says he had to learn to walk again).Over the years we have had a lovely time, supporting local shows, helping judges with their number etc. She has had many BOB wins and some lovely stakes wins. When she turned 7, we decided to look at Veteran Warrant. She turned 7 on the 8th of October 2024 and gained her first 2points at Portsmouth &Southsea on the 13th, under Diane Stewart-Ritchie. In 2025, we hit the ground running, in February she gained 3 points at Ilfracombe, under Jerry Stephens, then in April she gained another point at Chippenham under Kris Kingsley, 2 points at Plymouth under Michelle Smee, and 3 points at Southampton under Allyson King. In May she won Best Pastoral Veteran in Group at Yeovil, picking up her first 4 pointer under Ed Forsey, followed by 3 points at Poole under Sadie Tadd. We took June and July off as Bunny had to have a few lumps removed. Andy now calls her The Pension Fund as her Vets bills are slowly eating through our Retirement Fund. In August, with most of the fur back, she picked up 2 points at Mid Somerset, again under Sandie, followed by her 2nd 4 pointer at North Devon under Louise Paterson. At this point we only needed 1 point, so off to Exeter again for Newton Abbott on the 30th of August. The judge was Alan Carter, and I was so happy when he gave her 3rd in AV Pastoral Veteran, giving her not 1 but 2 points, she had done it, she had gained her 25points for her Veteran Warrant in 10 shows in 10months.She is entered for 1 more show in September then she will take a break again, as sadly I have found a couple more lumps, which no doubt will need to be removed ! (Did I mention the Pension Fund)! Huge thanks to Kerry & Fritz for giving me this wonderful, weird noisy, oh so special little ball of fluff. I simply adore her and hope to adore her for many more years to come. Love you Bunny Wabbit.
Saturday 7th Sept was Pastoral, Working and Hound Group Day at Richmond Ch show, happily the heavy thundery showers of the previous days had stopped helping the ground the dry up. We last had CCs there in 2023 the set being taken away and given to us for a second club Ch show, but they kept us on with a very good classification, sadly though the location proved to be not very popular especially without CCs. The show moves next year to Stoneleigh and with a more central location hopefully it will be more popular with Buhund exhibitors, it will of course be an indoor show. The show is one of the oldest starting in 1895, when I first started showing it was held on Ascot Racecourse moving to Loseley Park in 2004 when the racecourse was revamped. This year our secretary Jenny Shorer-Wheeler had a very busy show as she was the announcer for all the groups & BIS. It is always great to be able to sit in the living room and watch all the groups being videoed by Our Dogs. We were in ring 13 after 87 dogs in 3 breeds going in at 2.45pm, our judge was Jenny Miller, she found her BD & BOB in Millie Lambert’s homebred Sturtmoor’s Gon’n Dun It (Gunna). RBD Marie Corin and Adam Camm’s homebred Mazad’s Nom De Plume (Dexter). BB&BV Maddy Norman’s Ch Arnscroft Delilah With Veekay (Lottie). RBB Anne Marie & David Taylor’s Frostisen Blakk Zitter (Penny)
I finish with the sad new that Di Butler died on 27th June. She was a club member for some years and had Arnscroft Aces High Di Of Telstar SHCM (Baxta), she also judged the breed at open shows. Before having a Buhund she was a successful breeder, exhibitor and International judge of Dobermans for over 30yrs particularly in the 70s & 80s breeding her last litter in 2000. She also judged all groups and Junior Handling at Open shows.
