NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS

National Working & Pastoral Breeds Premier Open Show was held at its usually venue of the Sky-Blue Connection Ryton On Dunsmore Coventry on February 14th. Just for once after all the rain the day dawned bright and sunny, but very cold especially for those traveling from the North .Buhunds were third in ring 4 after 2 breeds with a total of 11dogs.Our judge was Evan Ryan who awards CCs in 13 breeds across 3 groups and is a Level 2 judge for Buhunds .He found his BOB in Jenny Shorer Wheelers Ch Knytshall Thistle Ink It Up Koromandel JW(Inky).Sadly Jenny could not stay for the group as she was having car problems, with the sudden drop in temperature most of her car doors were frozen when she went to leave home, so she could not get all her other dogs into their cages had to leave them at home and needed to get back to them, she only arrived just in time for the breed. RBOB Sue Crocker’s Leggatts Voulez Vous (Tissy)who was also Best Veteran. The club supports the show and offers prize money of 1st £3, 2nd £2, 3rd £1 in each class plus £10 for BOB and £5 for BP, although on this occasion sadly both entries were absent for a couple of reasons. Our steward was Sam Guillod- Rees who is becoming a very experienced steward having stewarded on many occasions including our club show. His sister Bethany with her and her parents Draccus Obsidian at Bucamereru (Ruby) were 4th in the Junior Handling 6-11yrs winning treat money for Ruby. The pair are also continuing to improve in their steeplechase competitions nearly managing to get a clear round the previous Saturday.

The same day but in Wales, South Wales Kennel Association held their Open Show at Merthyr Leisure Centre, which turned out to be a great show for the breed. The Buhund judge was Dr Ian Gabriel who gives CCs in 22 breeds across 3 Groups, he awarded Millie Lambert’s Sturtmoor’s Gon’n Dun It JW (Gunna) BOB and PG1 ,then the icing on the cake was when Leila Tarabad who gives CCs in 31 breeds across 3 groups awarded Gunna RBIS, many congratulations a fabulous result. Millie told me that BIS was a Curly-coat Retriever owned by Maggie & Jerry Stephens Brightmeadow Rumour Has It JW (Tyson)whose sire Tarzan is the breed record holder.

A few days earlier Sarah Stonton headed off to Scants Corner Farm in Norfolk with Wheatshade Snow Dreamer SWUK L5 Ex (Pixie) for a pre entry National Nosework Trial which Pixie won, being the only dog to get a badge in each section, meaning she found the two hides in the required time of 3mins in each of the 4 sections Interior, Exterior, Vehicles & Various Items ( only1 hide here to be found in 1 minute) .She has now won out of Pre Entry and will go into Entry with the same searches but 3 hides to be found in 5mins,as you go up the levels the hides becomes more difficult for the dog to find.

Scants Corner farm has an interesting history it dates back to the 1700s. It had been derelict of at least 10yrs when it was bought by Jane Drinnan-Payne and her husband Mark, prior to that it had been a small working pig farm. While the builders renovated the house, Jane and Mark sorted out the 3.5 acres(approx ) of paddock and garden finally making it their home in 2015, they built their first outdoor school in 2016 .Very sadly husband Mark died suddenly in 2018.Jane had to decide what to do and with the sale of the company she and Mark had owned finally going through, she decided to risk it and build an agility venue ,not what she had Mark had previously planned but agility was something they had both enjoyed . 2020 saw the replacement outdoor school next to the new indoor school with a large car park and toilet facilities. It was then ready to be a host venue for agility and other canine activities with indoor and outdoor facilities.

Sadly, the blue sky and sunshine of Valentines Day was replaced the next day by torrential rain in the south and sleet and snow further north. It was of course the day that Marie Corin had entered The Cancer Research UK London Winter Run 10km race with over 25,000 participants. Marie received the iconic finisher medal for completing the run but said it was the worst weather she had run in so cold and wet, if only it had been the day before ! but she still managed the run in the great time of 1 hour 6mins, but said she was very pleased to get home and have a hot bath.
