NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS
Pastoral Day at Crufts was Thursday 5th March, our judge was Millie Pentland (Camille) whose history of showing, breeding and judging Buhunds was in my breed notes 27th February. We were second in the ring 16 after 100 Samoyeds, going in just before 1pm. The day dawned bright and sunny with not a cloud in the sky, although it was a little chilly first thing and we could not imagine it turning into the warmest day of the year so far in many places, as we were inside! The day will go down in breed history and was a day to remember for the Knytshall kennel of Jacque & Michael Cobb and Nancy Kent and the Koromandel kennel of Jenny Shorer -Wheeler who between them took 3 of the four green and white cards, and even with the fourth green card there was a Koromandel connection. Jacque, Michael and Nancy’s Ch Koromandel Best Served Cold At Knytshall (Jamie)was BOB, DCC & BV he is by Ch/Can Ch Kyon’s Bold Norseman x Ch Maid of Copper For Koromandel (Imp Fin), this was his 24CCs he also has 18RCCS. He is from the first Buhund litter that Jenny bred nine years ago, and history was made as he is the first Buhund to win 4 BOBs at Crufts. The first three were consecutive, in 2019 the judge was Celia Vines, in 2020 it was Kerry Frost no Crufts in 2021 due to the pandemic, then in 2022 he was BOB under Steve Hall. RDCC his 3rd he also has a CC Marie Corin and Adam Camm’s home bred Mazads Nom De Plume (Dexter), he is by their Ch Kligenthal Almuric (SHCEX)(Bergen) x Gladidegelli Arvejente For Rikarlo A.I (Lucy). He was also RDCC at Crufts last year,as I said earlier in the notes there is a connection here with Koromandel as Bergen is out of Jamie’s litter sister Ch Koromandel Gild The Lily. BCC her fourth she also has 2 RCCs Ollie Wheelers Ch Knytshall Thistle Ink It Up Koromandel JW (Inky), she is by Jamie x Knytshall Eloise. I think history was also made as the RBCC her first was Inky’s litter sister Jenny Butters Knytshall Tansy’s Tully (Tully), both Inky and Tully are Black, I am sure someone will correct me, but I think this is the first time two Black litter sisters have won the CC and RCC at Crufts. Their litter brother Knytshall Ragged Robin (Rowdy) won the GCDS Dog class, and another litter brother Knytshall Beau Bramble (Beau) won the PGD class, so quite a litter and they are all black. Tully was handled so well and very sympathetically by Mary Dosson as her owner was competing in the Rally Ring. Best Veteran Bitch was Lisa and Alex Strong’s Ch Leggatts Dancing Queen At Draccus (Eris) she is by Frostisen Winsome (IKC) x Knytshall Noor Ul Ain and has 3CCs and 7 RCCs. BP Mary & David Dosson’s Kimura’s Ola Norman (Imp Nor) (Ola). He is by Dan /Nor Ch Kimura’s Kyrre x Dan/Nor Ch Kimura’s Froydis. This was his 2nd BP at a Ch show as he was also BP at LKA which was his first Ch show. Judging over and photos taken it was picnic time, thanks to everyone who proved all the goodies, as usual we could have fed most of the NEC. It was a lovely day everyone is so supportive of each other and of course win or lose we all take the best dog home. On a personal note I would like to thank Neil Hood so much for handling Time for me, I have not been to a show since last summer due to personal reasons, and I was not sure I would get to Crufts till the day before, Neil was on standby to show Time as Debbie was Deputy Crufts show manager this year so could not handle him. Time had never been handled by a man before and never really met Neil before either, but Neil’s handling skills were obvious as Time showed really well only being beaten by his dad Jamie in Veteran.
Those of you who have been in the breed some time will remember Lynn and Tony Isaac, Lynn bred my Ch/Bel Ch Tonylynn’s Charles Laffite AW (P)R2Ex (Fizz). Before falling in love with Buhunds Lynn bred and showed Cavaliers. Lynn showed Fizz’s litter sister Tonylynn’s Ayalafizz and his mum Fullani Feema Avev Tonylynn,a litter brother was Tina Tomoko Imai’s adored and much missed Gin (Tonylynn’s Bollinger)Very sadly Lynn died much too young of cancer before the pandemic, I had not seen Tony since Lynn’s funeral, so I was delighted when he came and sat down at the benches, where we able to have a lovely catch up, he lives in Hereford and made the trip up to see us.
On the Sunday morning Bethany Guillod -Rees was shortlisted from a class of 15 in the Junior Handling YKC Final 6-11yrs under Nancy Bassent, handling her and her parents Dr Jo and Nicholas Guilld -Rees Draccus Obsidian At Bucamereru(Ruby),they also won the GCDS Bitch class in the breed, she is Ch Rikarlo Gable (JW) x Ch Leggatts Dancing Queen At Draccus.
I finish with many thanks to all of you who so ably manned the Discover Dogs breed booth over the 4 days. (more details next week). Being such a small numerical breed the only way they can become better known is through Discover Dogs, and to a certain extent competing with them in various canine activities. It was very sad day when DD in London was stopped making Crufts even more important, over the years we have had some lovely owners who have come from DD. Very often people are not looking for a puppy at the moment but perhaps next year or the year after, which often suits the fact that we do not have many puppies born each year.
