NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS

Many of you know that we have a young handler in the club, Bethany Guillod -Rees. She had Ruby as a puppy which she wanted to show, but not growing up in a showing family it was not easy to start but practice and determination paid off , and she is now winning junior handling classes and also being successful in breed, the last being gaining a RCC at National Working and Pastoral Breeds Ch show under Chris Chapman. I was therefore very pleased to have a report on this year’s YKC camp from her.

‘Ruby and I had lots of fun at YKC camp which is held at the Rutland showground, especially in handling and agility. This year it was organised differently to accommodate the unpredictable British weather, so our chosen training sessions were in the morning, starting at 8. 15am.In the afternoon we had the optional ‘Have a Go’ sessions on grooming and educational courses, including Dog Behaviour, Canine Conditional, Medical Detection and Canine Photography, which were all very interesting and more relaxing for the dogs after action packed mornings of training. I had a great experience. Ruby and I learned a lot of new skills. We also entered some Crufts qualifiers and qualified in handling again. I had my first KC basic Obedience test, and we had a great score! We also had our first KC Rally L2 qualifying score! Finally, we had our first clear round in agility, but sadly not in the qualifier. Ruby is so used to having treats in training she finds it hard to be motivated throughout the whole course, so often runs out to Mum for a treat! It was a great but exhausting week.’Thank you, Bethany sounds to have been a fantastic week with great courses. Ruby is Draccus Odsidian At Bucamereru.

This year Terrier Working & Pastoral Day at Bournemouth Ch show run by Bournemouth Canine Association was held on Saturday 9th August, this was the first day of the show as it runs over the weekend and Monday, I think it is the only Ch show now to have a Monday as a show day, apart from those that are held over Bank holidays. Last year the show was held on its own ground at Pikes Farm near Poole in Dorset, there were no chairs, no benching and limited tenting but exhibitors could take gazebos. This year the show moved to New Park, Brockenhurst in the New Forest on the schedule it said ,‘Large Marquess with plenty of undercover space for Exhibitors’ .I assume that the fact that the show needed more space which is why the show moved back to Brockenhurst, certainly when I went a few years ago although there were benches but the tents were very small and very little cover over the rings. From the map this year although there were no benches and you still need to take chairs there were large marquess with the rings in front of them, and an area for gazebos for grooming and cages. On Friday the 8th the Association ran an Open Premier show with a Junior Warrant Heat. BOB under Matin Sanders was Millie Lambert’s homebred Sturtmoor’s Gon’n Dun It JW (Gunna), he was also 2nd in the Birdbrook Rosettes Junior Stakes under Steve Bennett winning £15.Gunna of course could not do the JW Heat as he has already qualified for the semifinal. Millie stayed overnight to attend the Ch show the next day, she said she hopes the stays in Brockenhurst but there was a downside as the was virtually no internet connection with the results not going up on Higham press till 8pm. Our judge at the Ch show was Huw Morris who is a level 2 judge for Buhunds ,he found his BD & BOB in Jenny Shorer-Wheeler’s Ch Koromandel Tusen Takk JW ShEX OSW (ai)(Muchly).RBD Millie’s Gunna he was also 2nd in the Lester Aldridge LLP Yearling Stakes under Graham Hill winning £25,so a great couple of days for them both and worth the overnight stay .BB Ann-Marie and Dave & Mary Taylor’s Frostisen Blakk Zitter (Penny). RBB Ollie Wheeler’s Knytshall Thistle Ink It Up Koromandel(Inky). BV Sue Crocker’s Leggatts Voulez Vous (Tissy).

The same day but further north in Huntingdon, Time and I went to a fun scent competition, where we had 4 farmyard searches, which included two tractors and every time you found a hide with either gun oil, cloves or truffle oil on it you were given a little yellow duck and at the end the person that had the most ducks won! We did not win I think we were fourth but at the end it was great fun, especially seeing everyone line up their duck to be counted. Time wasn’t very keen on one search where there were large buckets of water with little yellow ducks floating on top, he really was not sure about that!

On the same day and a few miles down the road there was a Bu Bumble taking place and Lisa tells us all about it. ‘Saturday 9th August promised to be a gorgeous warm sunny day but luckily the Bu Bumble was being held at Hinchingbrooke Country Park which has a large wild swimming quality lake and various woodland walks. The park has started to allow people to wild swim in the lake as well as canoeing and paddle boarding, they have 2 lifeguards in attendance when the lake is open for these activities. The Buhunds Loki, Eris Raven, Luna, Ulfric, Freya, Pixie, Ruby and Teya pus 3 honouree Buhunds Razza, Luna and Amka gathered with their humans for a stroll. Once safely away from the car parks and the open field where BBQ’S were happening, various dogs were let off and some zoomies commenced which caused much laughter. It was a chance to see how the young sisters Freya and Pixie had grown and how half-sisters Ruby and Raven compared to each other. The dogs all dashed along the paths and most dived in and out of the water effortlessly climbing the banks. There are purpose-built spots around the lake that gradually slope into the water, at these places we often stop and throw sticks for the swimmers amongst the dogs, one of these spots is now used as the entrance point for the new water activities, but the dogs are still welcome to splash about in that section. Nearing the end of our walk there was a brief bit of excitement when a family of Swans was discovered in one of the side channels off the lake and had to be barked at, but none of the dogs went into the water to get close to the Swans. Walk completed everyone wandered up to the café and settled down for refreshments and a natter, whilst most of the dogs had a snooze. Finally, it was time for all to head back to the car park and make their way home’. Thank you Lisa sounds to have been another great Bumble.
