Breed Notes 18th July 2025 Margaret Deuchar

NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS

National Working and Pastoral Breeds Ch show was held on Saturday 12th July on the Three Counties showground in Malvern its usual venue, and as I said in my notes last week, we took our open show back there, so exhibitors had two shows a CC show and our open show. Unfortunately, the heatwave was back, and it was very hot, often the West Country and Wales are not as hot as here in London but not this time. It was cooler outside under the trees with a slight breeze, but once out of the shade the heat was searing so it was an almost unanimous decision to show inside, although there was not much air flow but at last there were benches that the dogs could relax on. They all seemed to cope well although perhaps some did not quite have the spring in their step than if it had been cooler. It was not an early start as we were third in the ring after the Hungarian Puli Club Ch show and then the Hungarian Puli classes, not going in till early afternoon. We had the Ramp for both shows with most dogs willingly going on, the handlers do not have to use it if they don’t want to.
Our judge was Chris Chapman who knows the breed well, having been a club member for a number of years breeding and showing Buhunds under the Bukris affix. She gives CCs in 30 breeds across 5 groups. She last judged Buhunds in 2021 at Birmingham National and has judged the breed previously on 15 occasions. Many of you will also know her as she is a KC Accredited Trainer for ‘Requirements of a Dog Show Judge’, ‘Conformation & Movement’ & ‘Points of A Dog’ Assessments. Chris found her BOB & DCC his 22nd in Jacque & Michael Cobb and Nancy Kent’s Ch Koromandel Best Served Cold At Knytshall (Jamie), he also has 16RCCS he is by Ch/Can Ch Kyon’s Bold Norseman x Ch Maidofcopper For Koromandle JW VW (Imp Fin) he was also BV. RDCC his 2nd he also has a CC Jenny & Dave Langford’s Frostisen Zeffer (Loki) he is by Ir Ch Leggatts Fernando From Frostisen (Imp UK) x Ir Ch Kyon’s Dronningen Av Frostisen (Imp Can).BCC Kirsty Irvine’s Tapui Herja (Hari) by Kimura’s Harfagre x Ch Blackombe Bodil At Tapui (Imp Aus),she is only 22months and this was her 2nd CC having won her first at Windsor just 2weeks earlier. RBCC her 2nd she also has a CC Dr Jo, Nick & Bethany Guillod -Rees Draccus Odsidian At Bucamereru (Ruby). She is by Ch Rikarlo Gable JW x Ch Leggatts Dancing Queen at Draccus. BVB was Jamie’s litter sister Lesley and Liz Butterworth’s Ch Koromandel Gild The Lily (Hildy) she has 4CC & 5RCCS.Show over we had a short a break while we had our picnic at the benches and set up our club show. Having located tables for the trophies rosettes and raffle these were covered with the club tablecloths, and bunting of Norwegian Flags was put round the ring. Special thanks to Jaqui Cobb for booking all the trophies in and out, which is so important to keep a track of them. To Chris and Mick Maynard for running the raffle, taking £50 and having a supply of cold bottled water, and to Lisa Strong for putting her experience in Stewarding into practice, club shows with all the special classes are not easy having to keep a track of who won what .Our judge for the open show was Spitz specialist Dolores Montgomery BSc(Hons) she is a Level 2 judge for Buhunds and gives CCs in 5 Spitz breeds. She found her BIS BB & BV in Lesley and Liz’s Hildy. RBB & Best Black Bitch Anne-Marie Taylor, Dave & Mary Taylor and Addreinne Frost-Treadwell’s Frostisen Blakk Zitter (Penny). Best Special Working Bitch the Guillod Rees Ruby. RBIS BOS & BD Jenny & Dave’s Loki who is Penny’s litter sister. RBD Millie Lambert’s Sturtmoor’s Gon’nDun It (Gunna) JW. Best Special Working Dog Ch Rikarlo Gable JW (Time) Best Black Dog Jacque & Michael Cobb and Nancy Kent’s Knytshall Beau Bramble (Beau). Being a club show there were other classes. The Brace class was won by the Knytshall Brace. ‘Special Bred’ by was won by Gunna and ‘Special Not Bred By’ Loki. Then it was the Trophy Challenges the winners of the Dog classes v the winners of the Bitch classes. Best Junior Cheryl Denham-Horton & Lorraine Bolton’s Tapui Haraldsson at Jjavacobe(Hogan). Best Yearling & Postgrad Gunna. Best Open Zeffer. Best Veteran Hildy. Best Working Time. Best Black Penny. All the trophies and Rosettes handed out it was time to thank Dolores with a gift and close the show, it was 5.15pm and it was still hot. It had been a long day, especially for the Guillod Ress family as Bethany and Ruby had to be in the main ring at 8.30am for the Junior Handling Association 6-11 years under Tamsin Blyton, but it was worth the early start as she was second in a very strong class. Also, earlier in the day Gunna was 5th in the Bannerdown Junior Stakes under Martin Sanders.
Hot off the press, thank you Lisa, the day after NW&PBS, Evesham & District Canine Society Premier Open show was held on the same show ground. Giving Buhund exhibitors 3 shows in two days. The Buhund judge was Val Dyer who awarded Cheryl & Lorraine’s Hogan BOB with Anne-Marie’s Penny RBOB. Lisa took her ramp which was appreciated by exhibitors.
