NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS
Pastoral & Working Day at Leeds All Breed Ch show was July 25th. The show is relatively new compared with some Ch shows only staring in 1951 at Roundhay Park in Leeds, moving in the early 70’s to Temple Newson also in Leeds, where it stayed until moving in 1982 to the beautiful Harewood House, it then also became a two-day show. Now an All-Breed Show giving CCs to all the breeds that have them it runs over 4 days and is organised by the Leeds City and District Canine Association.
When I first started showing back in the 1990’s the show scheduled the breed without CCs ,but gradually the entries dropped not helped by the fact that the show although changed its days one was a Monday, which was never popular and one year there were no Buhund entries so the breed was dropped, only being scheduled again when the show became an All-Breed show and our CCs were moved from Driffield. The Monday show date was dropped many years ago, when the show took on the SWKA dates after that show moved to October having lost its summer venue in Chepstow.
Our judge this year was Frank Kane whose name I am sure you all know .He started judging in 1974 with Cockers, American Cockers and Sealyhams, and is now approved to award CCs in 140 breeds across all seven groups, and judged BIS at Crufts in 2012 .He has judged around the world judging BIS at the Royal Show in Australia, in the US ,Japan and South America as well as many FCI shows across Europe, and is looking forward to judging the World show in Helsinki. He is of course is also known for commentating on Crufts for the past 20yrs on TV, he was also commenting on the groups at Leeds. One thing you may not know is that he is also a keen horseman .This was the third time Frank had judge the breed, the last time was at Windsor in July 2017.He found his BOB winning his 23rds CC Jacque & Michael Cobb and Nancy Kent’s Ch Koromandel Best Served Cold At Knytshall (Jamie), he also has 16RCCS and was also BV he is by Ch/Can Ch Kyon’s Bold Norseman x Ch Maidofcopper For Koromandle JW VW (Imp Fin) ).RDCC his 7th Jenny Shorer-Wheeler’s Ch Koromandel Tusen Takk JW (ai)(Muchly) he also has 21CCS, he is by Trollheimens JR Made For Cascillus x Sturtmoor Ffacination With Koromandel .The star of the day though has to be Kirsty Irvine’s Tapui Herja (Hari) winning her 3rd CC in 3 consecutive shows at only 14 months being born on 13th May 2024 .Her first was at Windsor Ch show under Celia Vines on 29th June, her second under Chris Chapman was at National Working and Pastotal Breeds Ch Show on the 12th July. She is by Kimura’s Harfagre x Ch Blackombe Bodil At Tapui (Imp Aus). Kirsty was very proud as Hari will be heading off next month to the land of her dam’s birth, when she joins Bodi’s breeder Roberta Crouch in Australia. She will now go as a UK Ch and am sure it will not be long before she also becomes an Aus Ch. Kirsty also said Hari was her third homebred Champion out of just 4 homebred litters. RBCC her 12th she also has 10 CCs Maddy Norman’s Ch Arnscroft Delilah at Veekay (Lottie) she is by Ch Arnscroft Di To Be A Sailor x Ch Arnscroft Di Or Comply.
We may be a numerically small breed with not a large entry at Leeds, but the breed made its’ presence felt, Jamie was shortlisted in the Group under Patsy Hollings and in the Veteran Group under Jacqui Ward handled by his breeder Jenny. Muchly won the KC Good Citizen Stakes under Jacqui Ward winning some good prize money, and Bethany Guilod -Rees won the YKC Junior Handling class 6-11 handling her and her parents Jo & Nick Guilod-Rees Draccus Odsidian At Bucamereru (Ruby), the judge was Brooke Patterson.
Tuesday 22nd July saw Jenny take Muchly to fly the Buhund flag at the East Of England Ladies Kennel Association open show held at the Forest Edge Areana in Swaffham Norfolk. He was BOB under Jacky Cutler and won the Pastoral Group under Simon Barton. It brought back memories to me as it was the first show I judged at back in the 1990’s. The show its self-started in 1939 when there were no groups just BIS & RBIS,and the show was held at the Rowley Mile Racecourse Newmarket for many years before its move to Swaffham.
