NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS
The Pastoral, Terrier and Working Groups were on Friday 13th September which was the first day of Darlington 3-day Ch show held on Ripon racecourse. After the awful winds of Driffield and the torrential rain of Richmond the weather had calmed down, and had made way for a much colder but drier conditions at Darlington, although it did warm later in the morning ,it was still rather cold in the benching area but happily the ground was firm underfoot with no mud . The show began in 1860 as part pf the Darlington Horse and Foal show with the name being changed to the Darlington Horse Foal and Sporting Dog Society, with 163 dogs from seven categories of dogs. In 1884 the show accepted the KC as its governing body and from then on ran under KC rules. In 1891 the show moved to South Park in Darlington, with the show having gained Championship status in 1900. The last one-day show was held in 1986, with the name Darlington Dog Show Society being adopted that year. To celebrate the Millenium the society held its first 3-day show. When South Park was renovated in 2005, the show moved to the grounds of Newby Hall which was built in 1690 and is the family home of Richard Compton and his family. Although it was a beautiful setting the ground did not drain well, and one of my lasting memories of the show is carrying the Buhunds to the benches and then to the ring which was under cover, although not all were, then there was also the sight of a gentleman carrying his Afghan round his shoulders, the next year in 2013 the show moved to Ripon Racecourse where it is held to this day. The show has had some other ups and downs, it did not run during the war years only starting again 1955 and, in the autumn of 2000, there was fuel crisis when fuel tanker drivers went on strike. The late Elizabeth Coleopy and I shared a car and managed to get to South Park and back, but many of the judges went by train and had to be picked up from the station by committee members. The fortunes of the show improved when in 2019 the show became one of the KC All Breed Ch shows giving CCs to all the breeds that have them, so we again had CCs there having lost them some years earlier, with our set being moved from Driffield, and this year there was over 8,000 dogs entered .One of them was Time but unfortunately we were unable to go, but very kindly Lisa kept me up to date with things as they happened, she said there seemed to be less trade stands this year compared with other years (this of course may be a result of Driffield where stands were damaged). She also said this year the show had altered the entrance to the car park to be the same one as the exit, this seemed to work well and there were plenty of car park attendants to help guide you in, they rotated the direction in which you parked as they had set up side entrances into the show from the car park, this made it very easy getting 3 dogs and a trolley into the show and to the benches. The dogs’ passes were checked on the way in and a there was a large board directing you to the correct pavilion. The benching had nice wide gangways, so it was easy to move dogs back and forth without having to ask people to move. The ring was rather undulating, but our judge factored this in when judging. Thank you, Lisa. We were first in the ring at 9am and Lisa was one of the exhibitors that had travelled up the day before .Our judge was Sue Rolfe this was her 15th time of giving CCs in the breed having judged them last on 13th July 2019 at National Working and Pastoral Breeds Ch show. Sue showed Buhunds in the 70’s and early 80s her best known being Ch Adoram Dynastic born in 1976 and Ch Adoram Benga & Ch Alkola Moonshine both born in 1980. BCC was another winning her first green card Lisa and Alex Strong’s homebred Draccus I have A Dream (ai)(Raven) by Zeal Loke x Ch Leggatts Dancing Queen at Draccus she was BP at Crufts. Exhibitors had not only a busy but also a very successful day. I am sure Mary felt the very early start she had was worthwhile when Barnaby was shortlisted in the puppy group under Kevan Berry. Muchly was shortlisted in the Pastoral Group under Norwegian judge Espen Eng, he also won the Event Support Services Open Stakes under Kevin Young who of course judged the breed at Crufts and was 2nd in the Good Citizen Dog Scheme Stakes under Richard Allen winning some good treat money in both classes. Also winning treat money were Marie Corin and Adam Camm’s Mazads Nom De Plume (Dexter) who with his dad Ch Kligenthal Almuric (Bergen) were third in the brace stakes under Julien Barney. Darlington runs a testing session for the KC Good Citizen Dog Scheme Bronze level throughout the day, with Barnaby and Raven passing showing they are good citizens as well as good show dogs.
The Sunday after Darlington Sarah Stonton took Ch Arnscroft In Di Ana Jack RL2 L7EX to Haynes in Bedfordshire where he qualified in a L9 scent trial .Many congratulations.
