NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS
Now that Boston Ch show has moved to the summer, Manchester Ch show is the first Ch show of the year, and being one of the KC All Breed Ch Shows it has CCs for all CC breeds and is the last show that dogs can qualify for Crufts 2025. The show began in 1860 and has run ever since apart from the war years and in 2021 due to covid. For years it was held in the G Mex, which was originally part of Manchester’s Central Station, and was the Northern terminus from St Pancras, this became a Grade 11 listed building in 1963. There were no All-Breed Shows back then and with limited space the show only scheduled breeds with CCs. Parking was also difficult, it was either in the maze of tunnels originally used as sidings for trains, or you had to use local car parks. It has had an up and down history for the breed, we had CCs there until we lost the set in 2003, then as the show did not schedule non-CCs breeds, we did not have classes either. In 2004 the show moved to Staffordshire County Showground after the committee explained to the KC that running the show in the middle of Manchester with bad parking, was making running the show untenable. In 2016 the breed was again scheduled but without CCs , until in 2019 it became an All-Breed Show. This year Pastoral Day was Saturday 18th, we were in Sandylands which is a hall off the main hall at 8.30am! which meant some last-minute booking overnight accommodation for those that did not live locally, with others leaving home at silly o’clock . We were first in the ring at LKA and are first in the ring at Crufts! but at least with Crufts you know well in advance. Our judge was Allyson King giving CCs in the breed for the first time, she also gives CCs in 13 Working Breeds and 26 Pastoral Breeds. She found her Dog CC, his 18th and BOB in Jacque & Michael Cobb and Nancy Kent’s Ch Koromandel Best Served Cold At Knytshall (Jamie) he also has 16 RCCS,and is by Ch/Can Ch Kyon’s Bold Norseman x Ch Maidofcopper For Koromandle JW VW Imp Fin. This win was from Veteran, with the RCC his first going to the other end of the age scale, Millie Lambert’s home bred Sturtmoor’s Gon’n Dun It (Gunna)he was also BPIB. He is still only nine and half months old and has had a super puppy career with numerous BPIB, BPIS and Puppy Group placing and already has 16 points towards his Junior Warrant out of the 25 needed, no mean feat in a numerically small breed, recently there was a bitch who became a Ch while still in Junior but missed out on her Junior Warrant by one point. Gunna is by Draccus Diamond Day O’Buhcafry x Ch Sturtmoor’s Free’n Eezee who is by Jamie, so a Jamie grandson. BCC her 8th she also has 9 RCCS Michael Patrick & Leigh Ashman’s Tapui Starla (Freya)she is by Jamie x Ch Kimura’s Vera With Tapui (Imp Nor).RCC her 4th she also has a CC Sue Crocker’s Leggatts Jive Talkin(Noodle)by Sturtmoor Floki x Leggatts Voulez Vous .Best Special Beginners and BBP Penny & Tom Glibbery’s Tapui Haldis (Daisy) she is by Kimura’s Harald Harfagre x Ch Blackcombe Bodil At Tapui (Imp Aus). This win qualified her for Crufts and also meant she was the breed representative in the Special Beginners Group. Although she is only 8 months and it was her first time in the Big Ring and it was late in the day, she put her best paw forward and with owner Penny really enjoyed the experience.
Jenny Shorer -Wheeler’s homebred Ch Koromandel Tusen Takk JW (ai)(Muchly), was shortlisted in the AV Pastoral /Hound Good Citizen Dog Scheme class under Sue Bird, he is by Multi Ch JR Made For Cascilius x Sturtmoor’s Ffascination With Koromandel .
It may have been an early start but there was a lovely atmosphere, and the company was great as always. It is always very pleasing to get BOB or BP, but when the groups do not go in till around 6pm having had an early start it does make for a long day, but despite this all showed well, and it was great to have a representative in all three groups.
Lucy Beatrice Gilbert’s Leggatts Fly Like An Eagle(Zuki) did not win a class this time, but did have a success in another sphere. Lucy was there all four days helping on a card stand, and as Zuki was being shown on the Saturday, she accompanied Lucy. Manchester runs Bronze Good Citizen Testing each day, and on the Friday, Zuki took and passed the Bronze Award. Zuki is by Ch Rikarlo Gable JW x Knytshall Noor Ul Ain.
Over the years 600,000 dogs have gained Good Citizen Awards.
