Breed Notes 28 February 2025 Margaret Deuchar

NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS

As I sit writing these notes the cold weather has departed at least for the moment and in its place, we have wind and rain, but at least the temperature is in double figures .Those of you that have been competing with your dogs recently have needed to wear your thermals and that is not just at outside competitions! The weekend 15th /16th February was a busy one for Millie Lambert and Gunna aka Sturtmoor’s Gon’n Dun It . Millie wrote, ‘ it was an exhausting weekend, but we had fun too ! At National Working and Pastoral breeds on the Saturday Gunna was placed 2nd behind cousin Inky ( I reported on the show in last week’s notes). We stayed overnight at Strensham Services and then head off to Gloucester Open Show held in the Avon Hall on the Three Counties showground. This was the first time the show had given the breed classes, and under Breed and Group judge Anne Mar-Gerrison (Valkira), Gunna was BOB & BP and then went onto win G4 and PG1 his 5th Puppy Group win. Despite the absolutely freezing conditions in the hall, as there was no heating , I even wrapped Gunna up in a blanket! he showed his socks off right to the very end of the day .We left shortly after 7pm and I have never been so glad to get home to a nice warm house .Super weekend with fabulous friends’. Congratulations, Gunna is certainly have a great puppy career and it will not be over till 2nd April.

Also, on the 16th Sarah Stonton took Pixie aka Wheatshade Snow Dreamer to Alconbury,Huntingdon for a Level 1 scent trial where again Pixie qualified ,so is now only 1 point off her Excellent in L1, which I am sure she will gain before her first birthday. A few days later Lucy Beatrice Gilbert took Zuki aka Leggatts Fly Like An Eagle to the Razgility club for one of their Steeplechase evenings, Lucy wrote ‘I was itching to get back to agility so went to a Razgility evening and was thrilled as we were not eliminated and ended on up on cloud 9 as we had a 4th place rosette ! I think it will be good year for competing.’

On 22nd February the Welsh Junior and Veteran of the Year was held at the Royal Welsh Showground Builth Wells. The competition is for dogs with owner’s resident in Wales. The dogs must have qualified by winning a first prize in a breed class at a General Ch show, Breed club Ch show or Open Show under KC rules. It is held as a match with the judge secret till the day. Millie Lambert and Gunna aka Sturtmoor’s Gon’n Dun It had qualified. Millie said they had a lovely day, the judge was David Bell ,Gunna won the first round against Carloine Friend-Ress Top Puppy Sibe, but was beaten is the next round by an older Afghan. The next day they headed off to Bridgend & District Kennel Association Premier Open show held at the Cwmbran Stadium in Cwmbran, Millie lives only 20mins away so definitely her local show. Gunna was BOB & BP under Darren Pearson(Winooski). Barry Blunder was the group judge awarding Gunna G2 out of 18, & PG2. Being a premier show these two Group placings qualify him for Crufts 2026, although I am sure he will qualify many more times. To finish a successful day, he was then 3rd in the puppy stakes from 13 under Darren Clarke.
