NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS
In every walk of life there are those special days that are remembered for some time, even for years. The breed may be numerically small in numbers, but it certainly made its presence felt on Saturday 23rd November at The Nordic Open Show, held where it has been for many years at The Sports Connexion Ryton on Dunsmore, Coventry. I said in my notes of 11th November the show has had several homes over its nearly 60yrs of exitance and has always been run by the Finnish Spitz Club. It used to be held outside in the summer, but now it is held in the last weekend in November, so it does not clash with any Ch Shows. It is the only show for just Spitz Breeds, even in FCI countries the Spitz Group is combined with Primitive Breeds. So, it is lovely to be able to see the diminutive Pom in the BIS ring with the Alaskan Malamute. Over the years the entries have been rather up and down as not the most popular time of the year with some exhibitors, when it is dark by 4pm and the weather can also be unpredictable. A few years ago snow stopped some of the judges being able to travel including our own Jenny Shorer-Wheeler. I am sure this year the committee had a few sleepless nights when the snow arrived country wide on the previous Monday, and storm Bert was forecast for the weekend, but in the end, it did not cause any major problems, although Jenny did leave home at 3am to miss the snow that was forecast to sweep in later. Some years ago, the RKC asked clubs to support 2 Open shows a year and The Nordic is one of the two we support. There were 14 entries going in after 16 Canadian Eskimo Dogs and 5 Greenland Dogs. The judge was Joe Smith (Mowgli) who gives CCs in 26 Breeds which includes 10 in the Pastoral Group. He found his BOB in Jenny Shorer -Wheeler’s home bred Ch Koromandel Tusen Takk JW (ai)(Muchly),he is by Multi Ch JR Made For Cascilius x Sturtmoor’s Ffascination With Koromandel(Fable). BP & RBOB Millie Lambert’s homebred 7month old Sturtmoor Gon’n Dun It (Gunna), he is by Draccus Diamond Day ‘O’ Bucafrey x Ch Sturtmoor’s Free ‘N’Eezee(Sheira) who is Fable’s litter sister, with BV going to Sue Crocker’s Knytshall Noor Ul Ain(Noor) by Knytshall Diamond Ted x Ch Trollheimen Elske To Knytshall Imp US who is Gunna’s great great Grand Ma so quite a family affair. Jo, Nicholas and Bethany Guillod -Rees Draccus Obsidian (Ruby) handled by Bethany won the junior handling 6-11yrs and was reserve Junior handler overall under Dolores Montgomery. The show has a number of stakes classes, Bethany and Ruby were 2nd in open stakes winning treat money, and Jenny’s puppy, 6month old Knytshall Thistle Ink It Up Koramandel (Inky) won the puppy stakes, both these classes were judged by Dr Ian Gabriel (Gaybryl), he gives CCs in 15 breeds mostly in the Terrier Group and is also a medical Dr who specialises in clinical haematology and stem cell transplantation, and is also a Kennel Club board member. He was also the BIS BP & BVIS judge, and to everyone’s delight not least Jenny’s he awarded Muchly RBIS. Muchly of course has had a fantastic year showing ,starting by winning the group at Manchester Ch show and has other group placings and group shortlisting’s throughout the year. Then it was BPIS and with everyone holding their breathe Gunna was BPIS, he is just 7months and this was his third BPIS which included being BPIS at the recent Club Ch show and is gaining Junior Warrant points at quite a rate. Not to be out done Noor was shortlisted for BVIS, she recently was RBCC at the club show ,so as I said at the beginning of these notes a day to remember for the breed. BIS was Janice Phipotts with her Schipperke, Ch Komargo Going for Gold (Zeta). At the Buhund club’s Millennium Weekend 17/18th June 2000, Janice did a Heelwork to Music demonstration with Trelowen Kesregna at Fullani (Fynn), doing it to the famous Glenn Miller track ‘In The Mood’. Fynn had originally been one of Elisabeth Coleopy’s show dogs but when she did not like showing, Janice took her over and did other activities with her.
The most recent Bu Bumble organised by Lisa Strong took place on Sunday 17th November just outside Cambridge at Milton Country Park, this contains miles of paths, lakes, a bike track, children’s playground and the very popular cafe. In the past it was previously arable and pastureland, but now owes much of its appearance to the extraction of sand and gravel for house and road building from 1930 to 1960, although the first material it is thought was clay taken from the site by Roman British Potters about 1800yrs previously. When the extraction of sand and gravel stopped the site became overgrown with thick scrub, this lasted several decades until 1990,when work started to transform it into a country park which was opened on 26th May 1993.The site was manged by South Cambridge District Council until council funding was capped in 2005, the council had to look at ways of how to continue running the park and made the decision to outsource its management to Cambridge Sport Lakes Trust, who took over and signed a lease in 2008. They have various activities and an events programme so that the Park can be enjoyed by anyone. The trust is a charity, so the park remains open because of the support of its visitors.
The Bumble took place in the morning which was just as well as the weather turned later in the day with heavy rain. Lisa and Alex Strong took Draccus I Have A Dream (AI) (Raven), Loki and Ch Leggatts Dancing Queen At Draccus (Eris) who manged to fall off the dock into the lake and had to be hauled out by Sammy, luckily none the worse for wear. Sammy was there with his parents Dr Jo and Nicholas Guillod-Rees and his sister Bethany with Draccus Obsidian (Ruby), also enjoying the Bumble were Sue & Martin Camm with Arnscroft Di Amond Pearl (Teya.), Zoe Cram joined the Bumble without a dog, she and her partner Andy are planning to have a Buhund in the future.
