Breed Notes 2nd August 2024 Margaret Deuchar

NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS

As I sit here writing these notes, I can’t believe we are almost into August, where is the year going. Now the better weather has arrived, just hope we do not have the intense heat some of the countries in Europe are having. Seems to be either wet and cold or hot, Time and I do not do heat, 24C or 25C with rain at night like a Camelot would be fine.

Southampton & District Canine Society Open show was held on 21st July in the Royal Victoria Park Southampton. The show had some very good prize money £50 for BIS £25 RBIS and £30 each for BPIS and BVIS. There were also bags of food from a well-known dog food company. Sadly, no Buhund classes but the Buhund flag was flown in the AVNSC classes. The judge was Stephen Goodwin who gives CCs in 20 breeds across three groups, most in the Toy Group, he did ask if Buhunds go on the table! If you give CCs in a breed, you can judge any group at an Open show, will not comment further. In AVNSC puppy Mary and Coralie Dosson’s  Leggatts Part Time Lover (Barnaby)was second and   Sue Crocker’s Leggatts Superstition (Franny) was third. Barnaby went onto win the puppy stakes with some nice prize money under Lee Cox, who gives CCs in 47breeds across all the groups except the Terrier Group. He also judged BIS, BPIS & BVIS.

In last week’s notes Lisa gave a detailed account of what is needed to run a Premier Open show. Many of you are doing agility, so just a few details of the extras needed for an agility show. The basics of any show are the same but then each activity has its own extras, and for agility the equipment and timing equipment needs to be ordered well in advance. The promise of help also needs to be finalised, apart from the organisers and judges, agility always needs a large number of helpers ideally 6 for each ring all day, from those that pick-up poles to the those that book in and do the timing. Often clubs will organise reciprocal ring parties with local shows providing whole ring parties for the day.  Once the entries close, the rings need to be looked at to try and make sure that they are as even in numbers as possible, there is also a limit on how many dogs can be judged by one judge, so it might even mean a reserve judge is called up. Also rosettes must be checked as most classes give 10% of the entries, these are usually given out by the judge either at the end of the class or at the end of the day. Most agility shows use Ipads now to record results which go straight to competitor’s phones, keeping everyone up to date as to what classes are walking (which competitors do to learn the course), which course is running and then who has won and been placed, so electricity is also important as often the Pads need charging at lunch time. It is all great until the internet goes down as it did when I helped a few weeks ago, happily not for too long though. So perhaps when you compete next in any discipline you might just think about what is needed so you and your dog can have an enjoyable day out.

Wiveliscombe Canine Society was held on the weekend 27th /28th July at Oake Village Hall & Lawns Taunton, with Pastoral Day being the Saturday. Mary and Coralie Dosson’s  Kligenthal Bran Mak(Teddy) was BOB under Jacky Cutler  who gives CCs in 4 Pastoral breeds, then Teddy’s son  Leggatts Part Time Lover (Barnaby)also owned by Mary and Coral  continued his winning ways as he was  RBOB &BP, and  later  Pastoral Puppy G2 and won the RBOB Pastoral Group under David Knight, who gives CCs in 8 Hound breeds. Barnaby should have gone back on the Sunday to compete for the Best RBOB but was at Leeds Ch show where he was BP under Albert Wight,  then shortlisted in the puppy group under Steve Hall,  a fantastic weekend for him and his dad who won the RDCC, a long trip for Mary but I am sure she almost flew home.

Three dogs have had clear eye tests in the last few day. A first test for Lisa and Alex Strong’s  home bred Draccus I Have A Dream (AI) Raven born on 24/04/2023 by Zeal Loke x Ch Leggatts Dancing Queen At Draccus, also having a first test Marie Corin and Adam Camm’s home bred Mazads  Nom De Plume (Dexter) born on 27/05/2023 by Ch Kligenthal Almuric x Gladidegelli Arvejente For Rikarlo (AI)and having his yearly test Dexter’s Dad Ch Kligenthal Almuric(Bergen) by Ch Arnscroft Di Na Mo Farrah Of Koromandel JW SHCM x Ch Koromandel Gild The Lily.

Very sad news that Sophie Kluczynski’s Kestrel aka Arnscroft Di To Be Adored has passed over the Rainbow Bridge. Bred by Di Stirling she was born on 19th July 2010 and was one of a litter of nine by Ch Arnscroft Kimura x Ch Arnscroft Di Nahs Mite (The breed record holder). Three of the litter became Champions Neil Hood’s Ch Arnscroft DiNah Sawr Us Rex SHCM VW SHCEX, Di’s Ch Arnscroft Di Or Comply and Joy Arney Fowler’s Arnscroft Di Sing An Aire who crossed the pond and became an Am Grand Champion. The show ring was not for Kestrel, she made herself known in other ways. Sophie said she was devasted, as Kestrel   was one in a million, she had spirit determination, had wily ways, was totally crazy and wild, loved learning new things, treats and being out side. Looking back on everything they had done together over the last 14yrs, Sophie said she had she lived a full and happy life, they went to Portugal, been on staycations, and had celebrated ever every Birthday. Kestrel advertised agility equipment for Pets At Home in her youth, been on packaging adds for various catalogues showing off dog beds and coats and was even on a land rover podcast. She had her own mind and if she did not want to do something she wouldn’t. She had been with Sophie for over a third if her life, and she said it was the end of an era for her and a character that will never be replaced. Sending you our condolences Sophie they are never with us of long enough.
