NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS
It has been great to have on-line shows, but to have actual shows back is fantastic, the first general Ch show was Southern Counties held last weekend 25th-27th June on the permanent show ground of Newbury & District Agricultural Society. There were no benches but exhibitors were allowed to take their own gazebos. This year there were no Buhund classes but 2 were entered in the AVNSC classes under Keith Thornton. Kerry and Fritz Frost and Addreinne Frost Treadwell and Jacqui Walmsley’s Trelowen Amelia at Frostisen won LB and Maddie Norman’s Ch Arnscroft Delilah at Veekay(Lottie) won OB and then went onto to be Best AVNSC from another 10 entries, so a very good start to shows this year. Lottie is by Ch/Ir Ch Arnscroft Di To Be A Sailor IRJCH x Ch Arnscroft Di or Comply, it was so lovely to be able to watch her in the group, and the show was considered to be a great success with the weather being on their side for most of the show.
The first open show with Buhund classes was Southampton & District Canine Association Show held on June 20th in The Royal Victoria Country Park, Southampton. There were two Buhund classes Special Yearling and Open for judge Steve Bennett (Gheluvelt). There were 5 Buhunds entered and BOB was Neil Hood’s Ch Arnscroft Di Nah Sawr Us Rex (Dino) (ShCM)(VW), born on 19th July 2010 he is by Ch/Ir Ch Arncroft Kimura x Ch/Ir Ch Arnscroft Di -Nahs -Mite. Neil and Dino had a good day at the office as Dino was also 4th in the Pastoral Group also under Steve, then went onto be BV in the Pastoral Group under Terry Purse (Tidemill). There were of course covid restrictions in place but everyone was full of praise saying how friendly, enjoyable and well run the show was, with the gazebos being well spaced.
Across the pond some dog shows have been taking place for some time with covid restrictions in place. The prestigious Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is an all-breed show that has been hosted in New York City in February from 1877-2020.This year the event moved to the Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown, New York and was held out of doors due to the pandemic on the 12th & 13th June. As well as breed there is also a Masters’ Obedience Championship with 12 entries, Masters Agility Championship with 36 entries and Junior showmanship where the juniors have win at 2 shows before they can be considered to be invited. Only 3200 dogs are allowed to go to Westminster so competition is very keen. The top five AKC Champions in each breed between November 1st 2019 and February 15th 2021 are invited to attend. There are 7 groups as in the UK but these include Non-Sporting, Sporting and Herding there are no Pastoral, Utility or Gundog Groups, Buhunds are in the Herding Group. For those of you who have not seen Buhunds being judged in the US, they are shown on a low platform which they walk on to up a ramp, this of course saves the judge bending too much! There were only 5 Buhunds so with a large grass ring it gave them plenty of room to show off their movement. The judge was Mrs Sheree Moses Combs who lives in West Virginia and started in dogs with German Shepherds. She found her BOB in Dawne Deeley’s GCHS Ch Tsarshadows Ragnar Lodbrok who Dawne also bred. He was born on 16th November 2015 and is by GCH Ch Kyon’s Bold Norseman (who came to the UK to gain his UK title and help the gene pool and he is the sire of Ch Kormandel Best Served Cold at Knytshall) x Kimura’s Karmen. BOS Amelia McLaughlin’s GCHP Ch Jotunn Bella Binna. She was born on 31st August 2011 bred by Vali Eberhardt & John Bradstreet and is by Gnipagrottans Jezze James x Jotunn Anja Kola. Binna has been very successful in the show ring and has done much to advertise the breed in the US and has also breed two litters. SELECT DOG Fay Adox’s GCHB Ch Fabraj’s Protector of the Realm by Trollheimen THD CGCA CGCU TKN he was born on 8TH December 2014. Bred by Faye and Else Turner he is by GCHS Ch Trollheimen Kiss My Cash x GCHB Ch Trollheimen Pink Tourmaline. SELECT BITCH Else Turner and Emma Roger’s Trollheimen Twist of Faith BN. Bred by Else she was born on 17th January 2018 by GCH Ch Vision’s Dino of Trollheimen BN RN (he of course is known in the UK as Debbie Penniston’s Casper) x Ch Jotunn for Alle Penegene BN. AWARD OF MERIT Erika David & Shahntae Martinez’s GCHS CH Hundehaven’s Kendall CA CGCA TKN born on 29th April 2013 and bred by Catherine Lassesen he is by GCH Ch Leite-Gard’s Asgard x Trelowen Linne( my Trelowen Ancorya was her brother from a later litter )
If may be some preferred the show to be in June as often in February it is very snowy and icy, causing Faye Adox to have a terrible road accident some years ago.
Stay safe everyone.
