Breed Notes 31st October 2025 Margaret Deuchar

NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS

Pastoral day at Midland Counties Ch show was Thursday 23rd. When I came into the breed, we did not have classes, then the late Robert Greaves chairman of the Elkhound club who was also a friend of the breed and was about to give CCs when he so sadly passed away from sepsis, persuaded the committee to schedule them. This continued till the pandemic when falling entries meant that when shows started again after the pandemic the breed was no longer scheduled. However, most years the breed has been represented and this year it was Millie Lambert’s Sturtmoor’s Gon’n Dun It JW(Gunna) who was Reserve Best Dog AVNSC under Patsy Hollings with Michael and Jacque Cobb and Nancy Kent’s Ch Koromandel Best Served Cold at Knytshall (Jamie) going Best Veteran AVNSC.

Sad news on the puppy front this year, last year we had 20 puppies so everyone on the breeders puppy lists had a puppy, this year that is not the case out of the three bitches that is was hoped to have litters, only Lisa and Alex Strong’s bitch Ch Leggatts Dancing Queen At Draccus had a litter, a black boy and a wheaten bitch, so a number of disappointed prospective owners. I only hope that they are sufficiently keen to have a Buhund that they will wait till next year, when hopefully there will be more puppies as more litters are planned. Until this year and apart from 2020 the puppy numbers have stayed more or less the same during the last 10 years at just over or just below 20, so hopefully they will pick up, with members working so hard to get the breed better known at Discover Dogs and with Bu Bumbles.

I do not know how many of you read the very interesting article written by David Cavill in Our Dogs on how AI thinks pedigree dogs are better than Crossbreeds. It says breeding crossbreeds should only been done by very experienced breeders as they can have a less predictable traits in temperament, coat type, shedding and health issues ,whereas an established ethical breeder can provide health test results and a history of a pedigree breed, the article of course goes into much more detail and is very interesting read.

Lucy Beatrice says that she and Zuki (Leggatts Fly Like An Eagle ) were finalist in the FAB Agility Shows Grand Slam Finals, and although they were eliminated not having done any practice for a few weeks Zuki really enjoyed watching everyone competing, she said it was a lovely experience and a lot fun so will try and make the finals next year.
