Norwegian Buhund

Breed Notes 4th July 2025 Margaret Deuchar

Norwegian Buhunds

Pastoral & Working Day at Windsor Ch show was Sunday 29th June, we were third in the ring 4 after 9 Australian Cattle dogs and 30 Australian Shepherds and it was very hot! but thankfully the show was benched, which as you know I much prefer. Windsor is my local show, and one of our daughters lived in Windsor for many years before moving to the New Forest, so I  know all the back routes which  can certainly help especially on week days, as although it is in a lovely location on Home Park just below the Castle, the area can be very busy on weekdays being in the commuter belt, and on summer weekends if the weather is good due to tourists flocking to the area. Despite this the show is very popular and is one of the few shows that has increased entries this year, with over 200 caravans. The show is also very popular with those wanting to buy everything canine and things for the owners as well with 60 various trade stands. When I first started showing Buhunds were not scheduled so I only went there with the Elkhounds. Then in 2004 I was asked to judge Buhunds there for the first time without CCs, as the show was going to be awarded CCs and they wanted Exhibitors to become used to showing there. In 2011 I again judged there this time awarding CCs and again last year the appointment having been rescheduled from 2021, as the show was cancelled due to problems with a clash of events after the pandemic.  Our judge this year was breed specialist Celia Vines (Parvodene), this was her 6th time of awarding CCs in the breed, the last being at Crufts in 2019. She also awards CCs in 3 Utility Breeds and 9 Pastoral Breeds. Together with her husband Mike they have been involved in the dog scene for many years. Mike was the only Field Officer for all three disciplines Obedience, Agility and Breed shows until he retired. Celia was on the Buhund committee for many years and has made up several Champions, Ch Trelowen Jaudyn who was BIS at the club Ch show and had 13CCs &11RCCs and was Top Stud Dog in 1994 and competed successfully in Obedience. Mike owned his son Ch Trelowen Canmel who had 5CCs with Celia owning Ch Olpenden Malachy At Parvodene JW SHCM he had 4CCs. Her last Champion was Ch Ailort Highlander At Parvodene JW SHCM VW he had 12CCs and 10RCCs a number of group placings and BIS & BVIS wins at Open shows.

It was a day to remember for the Tapui Kennel of Kirsty Irvine with Celia finding her BOB &DCC his first he also has a RCC in Cheryl Denham-Horton & Lorraine Bolton’s Tapui Haraldsson at Jjavacobe (Hogan) he is by Kimura’s Harfagre x Ch Blackombe Bodil At Tapui (Imp Aus) and is only 6weeks out of puppy. RDCC his 11th he also has 9CCS my Ch Rikarlo Gable JW (Time) he is by Ch Koromandel Best Served Cold At Knytshall x Ch Kimura’s Vera with Tapui. BCC her first was Hogan’s litter sister Kirsty’s Tapui Herja at Blackcombe (Hari).BV & RBCC her 2nd she also has 3CCs making the trip over from Northern Ireland worthwhile, Sue Sercombe’s Ch Trelowen Dizzy Rascal she is by Tokyn Durian x Pink Pigeon. There were a couple of other successes, Bethany Guillod Rees was 2nd in the Junior Handling 6-11yrs handling her and her parents Draccus Odsidian At Bucamereru. MillieLambert’s homebred Sturtmoor’s Gon’n Dun It JW(Gunns) was third in the Bred By Exhibitor Stakes under Moray Armstrong winning £15 he is by Draccus Diamond Day ‘O’ Bucafrey x Ch Sturtmoor’s Free’ N Eezee and has 2RCCs.

After the judging we had a picnic at the benches, and it was lovely that Celia joined us for a chat.

In my notes of 20th June, I wrote about the passing of Terge Lindstrom and below Kirsty Irvine tells of how she met the Lindstroms and how they became friends.

‘On the 10th of June, I heard the very sad news that Terje Lindstrom of the famous Kimura Kennel in Norway has passed away. Terje was full of life, a successful businessman and had recently judged Rottweilers, which is why this news was particularly shocking. Together with wife Katherine, they had the world-renowned Kimura Kennel, responsible for outstanding achievements and successes in breeding and showing Norwegian Buhunds and Rottweilers and even a Boston Terrier or two. Terje had a huge passion as does Katherine for their breeds and everything they did with them, breeding showing and even the dog sport Schutzhund with their Rottweilers. In recent times they have concentrated much more on the Norwegian Buhunds and now only have these now, in their beautiful home in Haugesund Norway.

Terje was the judge of the two whilst Katherine concentrated on the whelping and rearing side of things. Terje was very well known as a judge across many breeds around the world. It was in this capacity that I met this wonderful couple almost twenty years ago, when Terje judged the Norwegian Buhund Club of the UK 40th Anniversary show in 2007. Terje found his BIS in my Tapui Tane JW. Katherine fell in love with Tane having seen him in the car park and thinking how lovely he was. After much talking and planning, I sent Tane to stay with Terje and Katherine in Norway, where Katherine piloted him to a Norwegian and Swedish Champion and he became the sire of their Kimura’s Inga. While Tane was in Norway, Kimura’s Didrik came to the UK to be shown by their great friend, the late Les Price. The exchange gave the Norwegian Buhunds a fabulous crossover of genes, thus boosting the breeding potential and lines of our breed. The Kimura Norwegian Buhunds are certainly influential and are behind many Buhunds in the Uk, Canada and Australia. Ten years ago, I imported my beloved Ch Kimura’s Vera with Tapui (Betty) from Katherine and Terge, to bring myself a little piece of my Tane back as she is his great granddaughter. Betty’s litter brother Erik came too and then continued his journey to Australia, where he was part of the reintroduction of the Norwegian Buhund in Australia. Last year I took a trip to Haugesund to spend a week with Katherine and Terge to introduce my Bodi – Ch Blackcombe Bodil at Tapui (Imp Aus) to their beautiful boy Harry -Ch Kimura’s Harald Harfagre. We had lots of fun, laughs and reminiscing and even watched Crufts BIS on TV and debated the winners. Katherine and Terje were wonderful hosts and a wonderful couple. Although Terje was out at work most days whilst Katherine and I soaked up all things Norwegian Buhund. Terje was slowing down with work and was planning on retiring. Terje certainly lived the best life with Katherine by his side, their sons and grandchildren, their beloved Norwegian Buhunds their beautiful home and a lovely cottage getaway in deepest Norway, where they went to spend time away from home. The dog world has lost a wonderful knowledge and passionate man.’
