Breed Notes 5th September 2025 Margaret Deuchar

NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS
After WKC we had two weekends of Ch shows without Buhunds being scheduled. Driffield held on Wetherby Racecourse used to have CCs for the breed but once the set was moved to Leeds Ch show, Driffield stopped scheduling us. This year they ran two shows together to make up for the show that was abandoned last year after high winds and heavy rain struck just before the show started bringing down some of the marquees, happily no one was injured but the committee has decided from a Health and Safety point of view that the show will be at Stafford next year, as the showground is very exposed to the elements. This year happily the shows had almost perfect weather. City of Birmingham also used to have CCs for us then it was reduced to the hated 1 CC just for BOB, then finally we lost them. They did keep us scheduled till a couple of years ago when only 4 were entered, which is a shame as the show now uses the new Exhibition halls a far cry from when it used the old cattle sheds that had been used for the Royal show before it was discontinued in 2009. This year though Buhunds were back! as under Dr Donald Sturz who is President of the Westminster Kennel Club in the US, Ollie Wheeler’s Knytshall Thistle Ink It Up Koromandel JW(Inky) was BJ BB & BOB AVNSC Pastoral with his mother Jenny Shorer-Wheeler’s Ch Koromandel Tusen Takk JW SHCEX OSW (ai)(Muchly) BD, and Cheryl & Paul Denham-Horton’s Tapui Haraldsson At Jjavacobe (Hogan) RBD,so hardly letting any other pastoral breeds in AVNSC getting a look in! It was the first time Inky had taken a red & white card at a Ch show, but she took the big ring in her stride. The show had a lovely innovation this year awarding a New Champion Rosette to any dog gaining their title at the show, and that was exactly what happened to a friend of mine’s mother who made up her Italian Greyhound from Veteran Bitch at just under 10yrs old, showing you should never give up hope! she had said before the show that she was going to retire her, a lovely way to go out.

The bank holiday weekend saw several Buhunds and their owners out and about, but as the notes had to be in early due to the Bank Holiday, I am catching up with them now. First an update on the Munster Circuit from Addrienne. ‘At Limerick Ch show on 21st August Int/Ir Ch Trelowen Aviator at Frostisen(Maggit)was BOB under Sean Carroll, but we never made it to Tralee as after Limerick dad fell ill and we spent the rest of the week with Dad in hospital suffering from Covid and for a while he had us all very worried. Happy to say he has now tested clear, an amazing recovery and the best treatment from Tralee hospital’ So glad to hear he is fully recovered Addrienne.

Lucy Beatrice Gilbert took her Zuki (Leggatts Fly An Eagle) to a FAB agility show in Dorset for their last independent show of the summer, with the hope of adding some points towards the Grand Slam finals in December. The Novice Steeplechase was the qualifying class for the Grand Slam Finals, not only did they get points to boost their league position but also manged a clear round and 1st place. They had also entered the Combined Steeplechase and although Lucy forgot the course part way round it turned out that even with the blip they were the fastest and had another clear round and won. Way to go Lucy and Zuki.
On Saturday 23rd Jacqui Walmsley went with Bunny aka Trelowen Amelia at Frostisen she is Maggit’s litter sister, to the North Devon Canine Association Premier Open Show held at the The Matford Centre Exeter, where under Louise Paterson she was BOB and won the Pastoral Veteran 7-9yrs meaning she now only needs 1 point for her Veteran Warrant. Jacqui had a good day as she won a bottle of Prosecco and a new cage fan in the raffle and in a separate raffle won a bright pink grooming box which she is having personalised with Buhunds and the Frostisen Affix. Jacqui also told me that she ran a quiz night and raffle at Paignton Ch show that made £2,000 in aid of the Cinnamon Trust, a great cause and great result Jacqui.

The next day Horley & District Premier Open Show was held on the South Of England Agricultural Showground Ardingly Sussex. The Buhund judge was Russell F Jones who gives CCs in 12 Pastoral Breeds and judges the Pastoral Group with Lisa Strong (Draccus) offering rosettes for BOB & RBOB. Lisa did not enter as she was Chief Steward also stewarding from the club were Dr Jo Guillod-Rees and her son Sam, while his sister Bethany won the junior handling class 6-11yrs under A Hawkins, was 4th in AV Not bred by Exhibitor under Marion Hodgson and 5th in the Horley AV Open Stakes under Nicky Mackie with her and her parents Draccus Obsidian At Bucamereru (Ruby). Marie Corin wroth, we had a family day out at one of our favourite local shows which was much warmer than anticipated , our home bred Mazads Nom De Plume or Dexter to his friends was RBOB with his litter sister Andrea and Andrew Platt’s Mazada Joie de Vivre (Luna) BOB, Bergen came to cheer on his offspring as he is still short of some clothes after his opp ,but was very happy as he made a new friend.
Stop press. On Saturday 30th Jacqui Walmsley’s headed off with Bunny aka Trelowen Amelia at Frostisen to Newton Abbot & South Devon Canine Society Show held at The Matford Centre Exeter, where Bunny gained her Veteran Warrant gaining 2 points although she only needed 1, from AV Pastoral Veteran 7-9 yrs under Alan Carter. She was also shortlisted in a huge AV Open Stakes under Susan Reillly.

On Sunday morning 31st Hari (Ch Tapui Herja) was released from quarantine in Australia and will stay overnight at Kennels at Melbourne Airport before flying to be with Dr Roberta Crouch. She has apparently been very calm in quarantine, will keep you updated on how she gets on.
