NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS
Sadly, earlier this year our Patron and a founder member of the club Shirley Dobson died, she left all her Buhund memorabilia which she and her husband Alf had collected over the years, to the club. Anne Smith who was our chairman when Shirley was Patron and who had been a friend of Shirley and Alf for some years, collected the memorabilia from her daughter Rachel. On Saturday 26th October Anne took it all to Debbie’s who is our vice chairman, and I joined them and together we went through it. Debbie will take several old general dog books to the KC Library to see if they might like them, as a couple were from the 1800s’. There were other things and some Buhund books that I will take to the AGM and club show next year, so members can see if there is anything that might be of interest to them. There were several scrap books containing critiques and details of shows going back a number of years, many of course of the Dobson’s dogs. However a couple caught my eye, the first one was Jean Lanning writing, ‘that in 1966 promoted by the Finnish Spitz Club the Nordic Show is the only dog show privileged to take place in London’s Festival Gardens, an ideal venue which must remain the envy of many dog show promoters’. The other from 1973 with judge Ivan Strawson also writing about the Nordic show. He wrote ‘A lovely day and a grand venue thanks to the kindness of Sir Alexander Stainer, who not only lent the ground, but also saw to it that the tentage was all in order. Congratulations to Angela & David Cavil, nothing was missing and as their first effort at running a show, I am sure all the exhibitors, judges and stewards will agree with me, they did a first-class job. Compliments also to the kind ladies, who laid on such magnificent catering,in all a very pleasant and well-run show’. The show of course is for all Spitz Breeds and is still hosted by The Finnish Spitz Club but is now held at the end of November at the Sports Connexion Coventry.
There are several ways in which Buhunds can prove that they are good at scent. Lillian Rumsey was thrilled when her Darcy aka Kata Syndattir Av Fjeldvidda At Wheatshade (Imp Nld), passed her Level 1 mantrailing assessment at the local Country Park. Her missing person had been lost for 40 mins and after 22mins she found him, winning a certificate, badge and rosette, but Lillian thinks Darcy seemed to love her chicken treat the best!
The first weekend in November was a very busy weekend for Buhunds and their owners in three Countries, covering most of the UK. On the Saturday Working & Pastoral Breeds Association of Scotland Ch show was held in The Lowland Hall on the Royal Highland Showground, several exhibitors travelled up the night before, especially as the breed was 2nd in the Ring. In the end only one out of five of the previous breed turned up so Buhunds went in 9. 10am.The judge was Brooke Taylor she found her BD & BOB in Jenny Shorer -Wheeler’s homebred Ch Koromandel Tusen Takk JW (ai)(Muchly). He was later shortlisted in the group under Gary Gray.BB & BP Ollie Wheeler’s Knytshall Thistle Ink It Up Koromandel (Inky), she is just six months old; she was second in the baby puppy bitch class 2 weeks previously at the Club Ch show, at that time she was too young for the puppy class. Later she was 4th in the puppy group under Dr Ron James.4th in the Puppy Stakes and 5th in the Special Beginners piloted by her young owner Ollie, the judge was William Dobbin. After the show Lisa and husband Alex met up with Alan Linstead and his wife Jan who live in Glasgow and with their dogs Loki (Wolfen Mr Mischief) and Magnus (Knytshall Ebony Michief) and went for a lovely walk on Cramond Beach. The same day in Wales on the United Counties Showground, Nantyci, Carmarthen, Mille Lambert’s homebred Sturtmoor’s Gon’n Dun It (Gunna )who was 7 months on the day continued his winning ways, under Warren Bradlwy (Aman) he was Best AVNSC Best AVNSC Puppy and won the Pastoral Puppy Group with the prize of 2kg of Dog Food .Then next day it was England hosting, The Coventry (Foleshill ) Canine Association show held at the Sports Connection Coventry, the Buhund judge was Denise Rowan (Rowancrest ),Gunna was again BOB & BP and Puppy Group 4.RBOB was Inky .

No breed classes so Marie Corin and Adam Camm’s Kligenthal Almuric (Bergen) was entered in AVNSC under Anne Webb (Barronoaks), he was Best AVNSC and then G4 .These wins gave Bergen the final point he needed for his Show Certificate of Excellence, for this he needed to gain 50 points at Open shows ,only one other Buhund has gained a Show Certificate of Excellence Neil Hood’s Ch Arnscroft Di Nah Sawr Us Rex SHCM VW SHCEX (Dino).More details in next week’s notes.
