NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS
Paignton and District Ch show had its beginnings back in 1909 when the late WJ Nichols judged the dog section of the Paignton Fanciers Association in the basement of the Public Halls in Paignton which housed the various livestock sections. It has had several homes since then and is now held at Westpoint Clyst St Mary Exeter. The main hall is also used as a wedding venue and a conference and meeting centre. It also has everything for a dog show with ample space for outside rings and trade stands, caravans and car parking. The show is also one of the few that has Agility, Hoopers ,Flyball ,Rally and Obedience plus a Have A Go Ring for people to try showing and a Companion Dog show and is only a few miles from junction 30 of the M5.Pastoral ,Working & Terrier Day this year was on the first day Friday August 1st .In hall were rings 1-8,then out outside the BIS Tent and two tents housing rings 15-20 & 21-26,the show was benched with the popular in/out rings with the benching behind, and the rings were marked out with tape on the ground. Buhunds were inside in Ring 1 after 33 Bedlington Terriers and 14 Lancashire Heelers. Exhibitors would have preferred to be outside, but the inside rings were of a good size running down one side of the hall with the benches the other side and there were chairs! which meant carrying in less paraphernalia, especially for those with more than one dog. I have said on many occasions that we are a numerically small breed and often do not have large entries at shows, but the breed still makes its presence felt. Our judge here was Tom Johnston who awarded Millie Lambert’s homebred Sturtmoor’s Gon’n Dun It JW (Gunna) BD & BOB, he is on a roll at the moment having only a couple weeks ago been one of the 5 dogs chosen to at JW heat at Thame to go forwarded to the JW Semi finals at Stoneleigh in October. Here Gunna certainly made his presence felt here as later in the day he was PG2 under Jeff Horswell. He also won the Higham Press Junior Dog Stakes under Darren Clarke winning £25, so a day to remember and a very good day at the office as they say! RBD was Jacque & Michael Cobb and Nancy Kent’s Knytshall Beau Bramble (Beau) this was his first green and white card, but he has only been lightly shown and was handled here by Lisa Strong. BB was Ann-Marie and Dave & Mary Taylor’s Frostisen Blakk Zitter (Penny). RBB was Beau’s dam Jacque & Michael Cobb and Nancy Kent’s Knytshall Eloise.BV on her 7th Birthday Sue Crocker’s Leggatts Voulez Vous (Tissy). It was good to see that there was a ramp in the ring although the exhibitors do not have to use it. On the Saturday evening the show holds a quiz night which is very popular, and this year raised £700 for the Cinnamon Trust.
Following is an article from Addreinne Frost- Treadwell on the show scene in Eire and the how Loki became an Irish Champion. ‘Sometimes a breeder’s greatest moment isn’t even in the show ring, it’s not even in the breed standard, it’s the hardest achievement one can get, and it means more than any competition win and it is simply finding the right home for your puppies. At Frostisen we have got it right 99.9% of the time, two puppies in particular His Royal Lokiness and Princess Penelope. Firstly our young Penny who is the apple of the eye of Dave, Mary and Anne Marie Taylor, they are the proud owners of Frostisen Blakk Zitter who is currently on 6 Green Stars ,2CACIBs and a CC with multiple other wins as well. Our Penny has been coming over to Ireland with her brother Loki on mini breaks. Penny has had some huge success under some rather awesome judges from around the world and I cannot wait to have her back for more adventures. The FCI system is tougher here than in the UK and the grade system prevented her from being made up already, some international judges will down grade on a simple thing like being out of coat or not standing still, we need 7 Green Stars unlike the UK which as you know only require 3CCs. I am confident that she will get there as she is stunning in my opinion. At the Munster International Ch Show our judge Mr Ozan Belkis (TR) thanked Jacqui Walmsley and I for entering such beautiful dogs under him and what a pleasure it was to go over them. Next on my list of exemplary owners is Jenny and Dave Langford the proud owners of His Royal Lokiness Ir Ch Frostisen Zeffer as he is now known. Loki first came over here on his holiday last August and did three shows, Killarney Ch show under Northern Irish Judge John Madden where he was awarded his first ever Green Star BOB and G4. His second show was Limerick Ch show where judge Alessandro Zeppi (Italy) awarded him his 2nd GS BOB and G2. The third show was Tralee Ch show were under Irish Judge Ms Dione Fitzsimons he was awarded GS number 3 and a group shortlist. The Irish KC has its own Crufts called St Patrick’s International weekend and his Royal Lokiness came back to me for a mini break, after his success at Crufts having been awarded BOB under breed specialist Di Stirling (Arnscroft) and then being shortlisted in the Group under Kevin Young for all the World to see. We had a lovely panel of judges for the IKC weekend, Elly Weggermans awarded him GS number 4 BOB and G4. On the Sunday under Irish judge and IKC ex-President he was awarded GS number 5 BOB and G3. Munster Agricultural Canine Society hold a weekend of 3 shows towards the end of July, two National Championship shows and an International Ch show, the panel of judges at these shows are always very exciting, on Saturday morning judge Billy Henderson gave Loki GS number 6 with BOB and G4, in the afternoon judge Andrzej Stepinski awarded Loki his crown with his 7th GS BOB and a group place, two in a day! The kind of thing I like to write on my list of nearly unachievable things to do! On Sunday it was the International Ch show and under judge Ozan Belkis Loki was awarded GS number 8 BOB and another short list. Loki has been remarkably successful, and it gives me the greatest of pleasure to show him. I would be lying if I didn’t say the
Frostisen girls all want to show him! He isn’t easy to show either he is so laid back he is positively horizontal, one of the judges said to me he would have given him the group if he had just pepped up a bit .My dog show pockets are always filled with different snacks ,toys and squeakies as he gets bored quickly, he is a real challenge but I do feel privileged to be allowed to show him .Dave Langford is no newbie to the dog show world having had Great Danes back in the day ,but Loki is his first Champions and I am extremely proud of the whole litter .Zeffer and Zsa Zsa are now Champions and Zitter and Zapper are nearly there ,Zeta is next to make her move which leaves just one who you never know may grace the ring one day’. Thank you so much Addreinne very interesting and what a successful and well-travelled boy Loki is , not easy when he lives in the UK. The Z litter are by Ir Ch Leggatts Fernando From Frostisen (Imp UK) x Ir Ch Kyon’s Dronningen Av Frostisen (Imp Can).
