NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS

We did not have a white Christmas, but it was cold and very windy at times, one Buhund owner posted that one of her Buhunds seemed quite different when outdoors on very windy days. Time has never been that worried except if we have a scent trial on a windy day, as obviously the wind stirs up lots of scents that can cause him to become distracted away from finding the main source of the scent .Many years ago though we did have horse that was lethal to  ride on really windy days, so I decided to look and see if there were records of how wind could affect animals, and I was surprised to read that there is a  great deal of documentation about it. With puppies it can make them even more active as the wind goes through their fur and whiskers and they feel compelled to chase after leaves, feathers and anything blowing across the ground as they become alive thinking, they are toys, it may even effect adult dogs in the same way.  On the other hand some dogs may become startled or even frightened with the wind being invisible  they cannot understand why the leaves are rustling and things are moving around, and  with things being so  unpredictable it can be  upsetting for sensitive dogs, they may even be upset indoors with owners having to turn on the radio or TV so the dogs have the sounds they  are used to. If wind was visible and we could see the movement we would probably be amazed as to how it moves it has been compared to the ebb and flow of the ocean, constantly moving direction, as well as moving scent around  it also makes  hearing difficult and this is another  reason it can  affect  domesticated and wild animals , birds and even insects .

One of the last shows of 2025 was Yeovil Limited show on Sunday December 28th held in Keinton Mandeville Village Hall Somerset. There were no Breed classes just AVNSC classes for every group with 8 classes starting with Minor Puppy going through to Veteran and AV Import Register. Jacqui Walmsley and the Frostisen’s Trelowen Amelia at Frostisen’s  (Bunny) was Best Pastoral in Group, unfortunately Jacqui was not well so she said thanks go to Ann-Marie Taylor for showing the girls for her with Frostisen Blakk Zeta (Birdie)being 4th in her class. The judge was Portly French

One of the first shows of 2026 was Taunton & District Canine Association held over 3rd & 4th of January with Pastoral Day being the Saturday, it was held at Wellsprings Leisure Centre in Taunton. This year they scheduled breed classes with judge Julie Pike who gives CCs in 3breeds. The breed was well represented, with Mary & David Dosson’s Kimura’s Ola Normann (Ola)(Imp Nor) winning graduate with second place going to Jacqui Walmsley and the Frostisen’s ,Frostisen Blakk Zeta (Birdie). Open was won by Mary and Coralie’s Dosson’s Leggatts Part Time Lover (Barnaby) with second place going to Jacqui Walmsley and the Frostisen’s Trelowen Amelia at Frostisen’s (Bunny). Barnaby was BOB with RBOB & BP going to Ola who had a very successful day being 4th in the Puppy Group also under Julie Pike, and 5th in the Any Variety Puppy Stakes under Chris Chapman. Felicity Snook judged the Any Variety Veteran Stakes with Bunny taking 4th place winning £5 treat money. Jacqui said she managed to do the veteran stakes but was still not well enough to do the breed so thanks again went to Ann-Marie for handling the girls in the breed.

Towards the end of 2025 a puppy Riverhund Kyon Where Shall I Wonder to Jjavacobe (Goose) came in from Canada from the Riverhund/Kyon Kennels, she went into the ownership of Cheryl Denham Horton. She was born on 1st July 2025, and her first show was on New Year’s Day when she was just 6months at Coventry Ladies Kennel Society show, held at The Sports Connexion Coventry Warwickshire where she was a very respectable 3rd in AVNSC Pastoral puppy under Angie Fieldsend. Two days later on Saturday 3rd of Jan it was Pastoral Day of the 2day Lichfield Canine Society Premier show held in the Sandylands, Argyle & Prestwood Centres in Bingley Hall Stafford, there were no breed classes with the AVNSC Pastoral classes being judged by Simon Lukmoore, here she was BP & RBOB and 3rd in the Pastoral  Puppy Group this qualified  her for Crufts, as it was a Premier show. Her kennel mate Cheryl and Paul’s Tapui Haraldsson at Jjavacobe(Hogan) was 2nd in open. The following day it was back to Warwickshire for  Pastoral Day of the 2 day Luton Canine Association Centenary  show held at the Kennel Club Building in Stoneleigh Park, again no breed classes but Goose  won AVNSC Pastoral puppy under Jenny Shorer -Wheeler, then the  Pastoral Puppy Group under Daniel Roberts who gives CCs in 7 breeds,  then  also under the same judge to a delighted Cheryl she  was BPIS, winning some very nice prize money. What a fantastic start to her showing career at just 6months. Many congratulations to Cheryl and her breeders.
