Norwegian Buhunds
I have to start with an apology to Lisa Strong, in my notes last week I mistakenly said she was JEP Level 2 Buhund judge when in fact she is JEP Level 3, & now JEP Level 2 for Samoyeds, sorry Lisa .
Pastoral Day at WELKS was Sunday 27th April. this year the show ran for 4days, including the Monday one of the few shows to include a Monday other than Bank Holidays ,held of course on its usual venue, the Three Counties Showground in Malven. We lost CCs at the show some years ago, Jacque Cobb was the last judge to award them there in 2018. The show has however kept the breed on, and on two occasions we have held our club Ch show in conjunction with the show. In 2022 it worked really well ,we showed outside for the Welks classes, then when the classes were over we set up inside in our designated wet weather ring, so after a short break we could start our show. Unfortunately, last year it did not work nearly so well, mainly because we could not show outside as the grass was too wet, so we had to wait until the Welks classes were over before we could start the club show, and being a Ch show it had more classes, so sadly Welks were calling the groups before we had finished, so some dogs that had done well at Welks missed the end of the club show. The groups were also called rather early but as the BIS ring was the other end of the show ground it was not easy to walk back and forth, so this year we held out first Ch of the year as a stand alone event which worked really well, our second Ch show will be with Darlington when hopefully we will be able to start our Ch show at reasonable time after the Darlington classes, the KC only allow us to have two Ch shows if we have one with a partner show.
Our Judge was Felicity Snook who is a JEP Level 2 judge at the time of writing for Buhunds and a number of breeds across all the groups, and gives CCs in 11 Terrier breeds .We were first in Ring 13 with a 9am start which meant an overnight stop for some or in Jenny Shorer-Wheeler’s case a long day, she left home before sunrise and arrived home after sunset, but it was worth it as her Ch Koromandel Tusen Takk JW ShCEx OSW (ai)(Muchly) was BD & BOB .Cheryl Denham Horton and Lorriane Bolton’s Tapui Haraldsson at Jjavacobe (Hogan)was RBD and BP following up his BP win at Crufts. It was the day for the youngsters to take cards home ,as two went to puppies, with Ollie Wheeler’s Knytshall Thistle Ink It Up Koromandel (Inky) being BB and BBP, by the time you read this Inky will have had her first birthday on 30th April and also now only needs 4 more points for her Junior Warrant. Lisa & Alex Strong’s Draccus I Have A Dream (Raven)was only a day out of Junior but that did not cause a problem as she was RBB, she was handled by Anne Marie Taylor as Lisa has a shoulder injury, so get well soon Lisa. Buhunds may be a numerical small breed but still made their presence felt, as Muchly was shortlisted in the Group under Darren Clarke who gives CCs in the breed, and made breed history by using the ramp in the group ring, having been given permission by the KC to be a ramp breed if exhibitors wish to use it, and Muchly showed perfectly how it should be done. It will be interesting to see if any other medium sized breeds apply to use it, as it is a good half way house so to speak between the floor and the table. The puppy Group judge was Yvonne Cannon who gives CCs in 7 breeds across 3 groups ,she awarded Hogan 2nd place so another great result.
Over the years the show has had its fair share of bad weather, but with the cattle sheds and the Severn building available it is not so much of a problem as for some shows, but in 2019 we were benched in a marquee near the Severn and it had to be held down with tractors as the wind was so strong, we were eventually moved out into the Severn building for safety, no such problems this year as the warm sunny weather had returned and all the judging was outside with the dogs only going inside to the Severn Building, for the BIS ring. The same day a different activity was taking place in Finmere Village Hall located on the borders of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, where Sarah Stonton had taken her Pixie aka Wheatshade Snow Dreamer for a SWUK Level 2 scent trial. Pixie gained a clean sweep with 100% meaning that she found all the scent hides in the four searches, Tables & Chairs, Boxes & Luggage, Outside Items and Car/Wall. Pixie was second and now only needs 1point to gain an Excellent award in Level 2 .
