Critiques: SAC Classes Del Richards
I was delighted to judge these classes and with the quality of the dogs entered. The Champions’ class was a real treat and took some working out – virtues were prevalent and faults in the minority. The observations I made were as follows – the sharply pointed ears were not always as evident as they could have been; there was a very slight tendency to a bit of ‘less sharp, a tad curved’ at the ear tip. Given their character, I felt that this was significant when choosing my winners. Different head styles also created a touch of variety in ear set – all were high set but some were less so than others. Tails were generally well set and tightly curled but finding those with a double curl and following the line of the spine made my day! It just helps sum up the essence of the breed in my opinion. The words ‘light’ ‘medium’ ‘moderate’ and ‘free from exaggeration’ appear numerous times in the Standard, which signifies that this breed is built for energetic and vigorous work so the kind of physique I was looking for was very defined – a certain robustness (not coarse) combined with a particular energy. Coats were correct although obviously some were showing the effects of the recent warm weather and had shed that soft undercoat, while some were changing to adult coat. This natural coat cycle did not feature greatly in my results. Temperaments were superb without exception – I must mention one bitch who had unfortunately been badly unsettled by a dog visiting this publicly accessible venue, but came to me with ears back, a smile in her expression, and a tail that never stopped wagging – a credit to her character. Toplines – a previous bone of contention in the breed I believe – were straight and level, although ring training occasionally resulted in some standing with hind legs a little too far back which, at a glance, created a slight slope that immediately rectified itself when standing more naturally. Eyes were excellent throughout as were muzzles (even tapering). Movement was active and with varying degrees of ‘lightness’ – most were true and straight in front but very slightly less so from behind. One or two were not quite as straight coming to me but were excellent from the rear. Profile movement was a good leveller and made my task easier as the very occasional ‘heavier’ mover, or other movement issues had less favourable results on the day. In all however, I think the breed is in good shape and a judge who has to apply such precise criteria shows how much in-depth strength a breed has, in my humble opinion. SAC OD (5) 1st Lambert’s Sturtmor Gon’n Dun It.12month old with a great presence and stance although just a hint of the expected teenage ranginess peeping through. Well shaped head with ears of good length and a bright expression in his dark eye. Beautifully shaped muzzle with straightness of bridge and well fitting lips. Body fitted the standard with correct squareness, depth of rib, just the right amount of drawn up underline, and a super coat with smooth protective top layer and correct undercoat. On the move he was light, with evenness of stride in profile and correct straightness coming and going. Tail set to advantage. Could possibly have had a tad tighter feet but at this stage of his development things can change. If promise can be relied on, this is one to watch. 2 Cobb, Cobb and Kent’s Knytshall Ragged Robin. 11 month black who presented an excellent smart outline with beautifully set and tightly curled tail. Appealing shaped head with required leanness, stop evident but not too much. Very good ears with height and sharply pointed. Coat flat and smooth mainly but in the changing process so not quite as enhancing to the overall picture as it will be in a few more weeks. An intense expression that really hit the spot for me. Such a light and effective mover keeping that typy shape in all directions. Like 1st, also a suggestion of that ‘changing’ stage but for promise this one is also going to trouble the best I think. 3 Butterworth’s Kligenthal Einar. SAC OB (5) I’m not sure if this is a gender thing but the bitches did not have as high an ear set as the males. 1 Shorer-Wheeler’s Sturmoor’s Ffascination with Koromandel. Almost 6 year old who summed up a judge’s predicament when you see a quality, typy exhibit with some points that you consider to be faults but are outweighed by virtues! At first glance, this one was my chosen winner as her balanced outline, lightness of bone, correct shaped head, a real ‘can do’ expression and combined with a subtle robustness just leapt into my focus instantly. Everything about her was moderate but exuded a necessary capability. Head shape was ideal with ears ‘at attention’, correct tapering of muzzle, and held proudly with the ideal length of slightly arched neck. Tail was set well but not always as tightly curled as I would prefer. On the move, it made a tight curl but occasionally while standing was carried slightly to one side and drew a little unfavourable attention to her loin length. Ribbing was excellent and added the robustness needed for a busy working dog. On the move she really gave it her all and demonstrated soundness befitting the original role of the breed. 2 Guillod, Rees and Guillod-Rees’s Draccus Obsidian at Bucameraru..Beautiful 3yr black who presented a slightly squarer outline than 1st. Superbly balanced body with ideal tail carriage, shortness of loin, good depth of rib giving an impression of strength combined with a certain lightness of build. Attractive well shaped head although ears (while sharply pointed) could possibly have been a tad higher set. Excellent feet – one of the best today. An easy profile mover and straight coming to but a fraction untidy in hock going away today. 3 Taylor, Taylor and Frost-Treadwell’s Frostisen Black Zitter. SAC Champion D/B (6) Very humbled to have judged this superb class – thank you all for bringing me such good dogs. 1 Butterworth’s Ch Koromandel Gild the Lily. Topped this high quality class with 2nd close up. This one really brought the Standard to life today! At nearly 8 years old, she certainly still ‘has it’ – and some! Her lightness combined with a robustness were easy to see and her non-exaggerated stance and her easy sound movement kept it all in textbook fashion for me. A beautifully shaped head with correctly set and sharply pointed ear tips were just the start of my appreciation of her. Muzzle shape was just right and that expression just gave me goosebumps! A square outline with the most beautiful double curled tail following the line of the spine were a pleasure to see. On the move, she could not have been better – effortless, business-like and sound in all directions. A great credit to owner/breeder. 2 Irvine’s Ch Blackcombe Bodil at Tapui. And pushing the winner all the way was this gorgeous girl! 3 years old and at her best. Another template of the Standard with squareness of outline, perfectly double curled tail following the line of the spine, body depth/ribs without heaviness, moderate in angles and all topped by that tough protective smooth coat. Head is correctly shaped with tapering muzzle, excellent dark eyes neither sunken nor protruding and another with an ‘I can do it’ expression. Ears set high, taller than base and sharply pointed. On the move she proved she wasn’t just a pretty face but (although had a few moments of disco dancing before she settled!) produced a textbook footfall while keeping her lovely outline. 3 Shorer-Wheeler’s Ch Koromandel Tusen Takk ShCEx, OSW (ai). I must mention this outright showman who gave the absolute best of himself at all times. No shame in this placing at all.
