NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS
You know I love writing about anything you do with your dogs and the successes you have in the various activities, whether it be showing, barn hunt, agility, mantrialing or scent, it goes to shows how versatile the Buhund is. I was very pleased recently to receive an article from Millie Pentland on how well her home breed young dog Gunna aka Sturtmoor’s Gon’n Dun It JW is doing; he was born on 2nd April 2024 and is by Draccus Diamond Day O’ Buhcafrey x Ch Sturtmoor’s Free’n Eezee. Millie wrote ‘On the 21st May we attended Pastoral Day at Devon County Show which was the Thursday, for a day out with Peter as it was my birthday the day before, of course we entered the show and took Sheira for a day out as swell. The Breed and Group Judge was Julie Da Silva, who went onto pass her JEP Assessment at Bath on the following Sunday. We were thrilled to not only win Best of Breed, but also the Pastoral Group! We had to return on the Saturday as it was a three-day Premier Show to compete for Best In Show, again under our Breed and Group judge. We were ecstatic, despite the rising temperature, to pilot Gunna to Reserve Best In Show. This was Gunna’s 3rd RBIS win in 2026, from 4 Group wins, out of only 7 Open shows ! He really is having fun this year; he has also attended only two Championship Shows with CCs and won the DCC at both of them, the Club Ch show and Birmingham National .We are very proud of Gunna, and of course Aunty Fable(Sturtmoor Ffascination with Koromandel ) as well , who gained her crown at SKC when we were on a flying trip to Germany ! Thanks must go to Lisa and Alex who put us up on the Friday night and drove us to the airport early on Saturday and picked us up again on the Sunday as well! Their hospitality was second to none!’ Thank you Millie I am sure Gunna will have Ch in front of his name by the end of the year. He continued his winning ways at Southern Counties at Newbury where under Tiina Taulos from Finland he was Best Dog and Best of Breed, and then although we lost classes at Three Counties this year, Millie and Gunna kept the Buhund flag flying by being RBD AVNSC Pastoral under Stuart Byrne.
On Friday 5th June Sarah Stonton headed to The Fox at Keysoe in Bedforshire with Pixie (Wheatshade Snow Dreamer), for a Level 7 Scentwork UK competition where they were 2nd
I really enjoy sitting at home watching the live steaming of all the groups at UK shows by ‘Our Dogs’, I know it is not always easy for them, but it really is appreciated by so many. So, I was thrilled to discover that all the groups from puppy, junior, veteran and the main group at the World Show this year were also being live streamed. When Pet Passports first came in Debbie and I decided to go to the World show that was being held in 2002 in Amsterdam. We took two Buhunds an Elkound and a Papillon. We had a certain amount of success with Ch Fullani Flekkefjord winning the Dog CAC(CC),with the BOB and Bitch CAC going to a beautiful bitch from the Kimura Kennel ,but the star for us was when Ch/Ir Ch Wolfen Just In Time was 3rd in a huge Group 5 Veteran Group for Spitz and Primitive Breeds, with a podium place and the worlds dog press taking photos. (Time is named after him, my first and what will be my last Buhund). We had a fabulous time staying in Holland for a few days as well. The next year we repeated the process going to the World Show in Dortmund, this time both Ravenstone Bersin Krisen the Elkhound and Flekke were BOB and our love of showing abroad really took off, with both Flekke and Krisen becoming Champions in 4 Countries in Europe and gaining their International Titles. Flekke was the first UK bred Buhund to become an International Champion and is still the only dog, with the bitch title going to Brenda Bethell’s Lux /Int Ch Arnsroft Glad Di Ola At Minforst. This year the World Show ran from 4-7 June in Bologna Italy, there were 30,000 dogs entered and like Crufts it had Demonstrations, Agility, Junior Handling and Heelwork To Music. Of course, there are more breeds that are recognised by the FCI than the RKC that can take part and some breeds are even split on colour, so you can have two of the same breed in a group, which are usually huge and completely different from ours as there are 10 groups. Buhunds and Elkhounds are Group 5 along with the Alaskan Malamute down to the Pom, with a Pom winning the Group. Although weirdly the dachshunds have a group all to themselves! The Saturday evening saw an exciting competition, ‘The FCI World Challenge 2026,’ with the Top Dogs from 57 Countries taking part. The dogs were all prejudged by 3 judges who each chose 4 dogs; all the dogs all then entered the Main Ring and the 4 dogs chosen by the 3 judges were read out making a short list. These dogs were then judged by Barbara Muller; the atmosphere was electric with every dog getting a massive cheer as it moved round the ring. The winner was an Old English from Hungary with the Reserve a Standard Poodle from Australia. The next day before BIS the winner of the Heel Work To Music reprised their winning performance to Harry Porter music, like we used to have with Mary Ray before BIS at Crufts ,something I still miss .BIS in show was a stunning black Italian Greyhound with the Reserve spot going to an equally stunning Pom the winner of G5.
