Breed Notes 15th March 2026 Margaret Deuchar

NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS

Last week in the notes I said these were your notes and I liked to hear what you did you did with your dogs; well, you did not disappoint. The first to contact me was Chris Curnow who together with his wife Bridget own Draccus Yin (Magnus) who was born on 21st September last year. Chris wrote ‘Group success for Magnus at Okehampton & District Canine Society Open show, held at the Grange Oakhampton Devon on Saturday May 2nd. We are delighted to share our results, it was a standout day for the breed, represented by our boy Magnus, under the well-respected judge Hilary Male, who judged all the breeds in the Pastoral Group, the Group and BIS  BPIS BVIS & BChIS .Magnus had fantastic run in the AVNSC classes 1st Graduate, Best Puppy AVNSC & Best AVNSC. In the afternoon we were thrilled that Magnus was Pastoral Puppy Group 3, the puppy that won the Puppy Group went onto BPIS’. Thank you  Chris a very successful day indeed keeping the Buhund flag flying.

The same day there was a very different activity but still in the West Country in Somerset this time, Pawfect Ability held a Barn Hunt. Sue Crocker reported her Noor (Knytshall Noor Ul Ain) smashed her final run for her Novice title and did her first run for her Novice Ex award, Sue also said Franny (Leggatts Superstition) surprisingly manged the first leg of her Noice title. Apparently, it was a glorious sunny day to start but ended with a more wintery feel, two seasons in one day!

I said I like to write about your activities, but I do not think the following is quite what Jacqui Walmsley or I had in mind! ‘Saturday 2nd May saw me up stupidly early and heading off to Okehampton Show. It is still a 2 hour journey for me, even though it is only in the next County. Ann-Marie had to work, so I left Birdie at home and headed off with Penny (Ir Ch Frostisen Blakk Zitter) & Bunny (Trelowen Amelai At Frostisen VW). I made it to the M5, just before my car lost all power. Quite scary when you can’t put your handbrake on or even use your hazard lights!  I called breakdown who were incredibly quick, sadly not as quick as the Police, who decided in their wisdom to tow me to the services. Have you ever been towed behind a Police car, in a 2 tonne car, with no power steering and no power assisted brakes? I have to say I never want to try it again. The recovery truck arrived 5 mins after us. The girls were amazing they said hello to the Police, who thought my Trans K9 unit was amazing. Bunny then fell in love with the Recovery guy. So my day at Okehampton did not happen at all. I  would like to thank the lovely people who stopped to help me, the lovely couple that stayed behind my car with their hazards on until I  had called my  breakdown recovery, and the lovely lady from DPD  who gave me a high Viz Jacket, and all the others that stopped to check on me. I would not like to thank the know all’s that told me to put my hazards on! On a serious note get some magnetic clip-on hazards, an absolute godsend in this type of situation.

Moving onto Sunday 3rd, we headed off to Yeovil & District Canine Society show held on the Turnpike Showground in Shaftesbury Dorset. Now this one is only 15 minutes from home. Ann-Marie came a little out of her way to pick me up at 7am!! We were pretty much the first arrive and the last to leave but at least we made it. There was a good entry, our judge was Liz Millward who judged all the Pastoral breeds and the group. She awarded Penny BOB, Mary and David Dosson’s Kimura’s Ola Normann (Ola) (Imp Nor) won Sp Yearling and Mary and her daughter Coralie’s Leggatts Part Time Lover (Barnaby)won Limit with the Frostisen’s Blakk Zeta (Birdie) 2nd. Open was won by Penny with Bunny 2nd although she was called back in for RBOB it went to Ola. Penny also took G2 in AV Pastoral Champion also under Liz Millard. Bunny took 4th in Pastoral Veteran then a lovely 3rd in the Veteran Stakes under BIS judge Maria Horton winning £5 treat money. It was a lovely day especially after the previous day, it is a great venue and being so local I think I knew seventy-five percent of the people there. We then loaded the van ready for the National’. Thank you Jacqui I hope your car is feeling better now! I have an apology to make as for Chippenham and Southampton shows are concerned, I said Penny was BOB but in fact on both occasions it was the Frostisen’s Zeta (Birdie) who was BOB with Bunny in as Reserve, sorry ladies too many Zs.

The same weekend but much further north Jenny Shorer-Wheeler took her son Ollie’s Ch Knytshall Thistle Ink It Up Koromandel JW (Inky) to Chesterfield CS Premier Open Show, held at Hillstown Village Hall, Bolsover. There were no breed classes, Kathy Moores judged the AVNSC classes and the Group   awarding Inky BAVNSC and G4. Jenny said it was a lovely warm sunny day, which sadly did not hold for the next day when it was cold and wet, but this time they did not have too far to travel at it was Pollard CS Premier Open Show held in Locke Park, Barnsley. There were Buhund classes judged by Russell Jones who awarded Inky BOB and short listed her in the Group.

Birmingham National has been held at a number of venues over the years, but in 2002 it found a permanent home at Staffordshire County Showground. It is an All-breed show so rotates its days, Pastoral Day this year was Sunday 10th we were second in ring 7 after 21 Valluhunds going in at 11am.The ring was in the Margaret Everton Building, I think it is the first time we have been in there. It is named after the late Margaret Everton who was secretary of Midland Counties and Vice President of Birmingham National as well as being a very well-respected judge. The hall is off the judge’s car park; it has its own facilities, the ring had green carpet with white fencing as in the main hall, but of course being separate there is a walk to the main hall for stakes and other classes. Our judge was Caroline Friend -Rees, giving CCs in the breed for the first time. She awards CCs in 37 breeds across 4 groups. She found her BCC & BOB in Kirsty Ann Irivine’s Ch Blackcombe Bodil At Tapui (Bodi) (Imp Aus) this was her 13th CC she also has 4 RRCCs and is by Aus Ch Kyon Urban Legand x Nor /UCH Ch Rennedal’s Brynhild Skjoldmoy. RBCC her 3rd she also has a CC Anne -Marie and David & Mary Taylor Ir Ch Frostisen Blakk Zitter(Penny), she is by Ir Ch Leggatts Fernando From Frostisen x Ir Ch Kyon’s Dronningen Av Frostisen (Imp Can) BPB. BPIB and Best Special Beginners Lewis Rawlingson & Laura Begney’s Draccus Yang (Nala) who is by Tapui Haraldson At Jjavacobe x Ch Leggatts Dancing Queen At Draccus. DCC his 2nd also has 3RCCs Millie Lambert’s Sturtmoor’s Gon’n Dun It JW (Gunna) he is by Draccus Diamond Day O’ Buhcafrey x Ch Sturtmoor’s Free’n Eezee. Hopefully I will be writing about him gaining his crown soon. RDCC his 3rd he also has a CC Cheryl and Paul Denham-Horton’s Tapui Haraldsson at Jjavacobe (Hogan), he is by NUCH Kimura’s Harald Harfagre x Bodi. BV Jacque& Michael Cobb & Nancy Kent Ch Koromandel Best Served Cold At Knytshall(Jamie) he is by Ch/Can Ch Kyon’s Bold Norseman x Ch Maid of Copper For Koromandel (Imp Fin) he has 24CCs and 18 RCCs. BPD & Special Beginners Dog Bridget & Chris Curnow’s Draccus Yin (Magnus)he is full brother to Draccus Yang. Although there was no love in the groups it was great to have a representative in all 4.Those of you that watched the groups in person or on line will have recognised the voice of our secretary Jenny Shorer -Wheeler doing a fantastic job commentating on all  the groups, think she might sleep for a week.

I finish with many thanks to the Buhund family and the wider canine community for their messages of condolences, phone calls and flowers on the passing of my husband David of nearly 62yrs. He had fought a number of serious health issues over the last few years. Earlier this year he seemed to be doing well and was looking forward to going to Crufts, but in February he was hospitalised with a stroke, he still wanted me to go and was looking forward to coming home the following week, but he then  had another major stroke from which he never recovered and in spite of the best efforts of the stoke unit at the hospital he died on the evening of April 27th.
