NORWEGIAN BUHUNDS
In my notes of the 24th of April, I wrote of the sad passing of Margaret Hamnetts. Our Patron Roger Thomas attended her funeral and has sent me the following. “On April 30th, I attended Margaret Hamnetts funeral at St Michael and All Angels Church, Kerry, Powys. It was a lovely sunny day, and a goodly number attended, mainly family members and local friends, with representatives from the Norwegian Elkhound and Samoyed fraternity attending. The Eulogy made reference to Margaret’s profession in Midwifery and her lifelong love of dogs, especially the Spitz variety. Her favourite breed was the Samoyed, closely followed by Elkhounds and Buhunds. Along with her partner Anne Spencer she enjoyed the showing side in all three breeds, enjoying the shows and making friends over the years, including my late wife Madeline and myself. This friendship extended to well over forty years. In partnership with Anne (who handled the dogs at shows), she had three Buhunds in the 1990’s, Kinsridge Pocket Locket (Minda) Squirreldene Neopolitano (Badger)and Squirreldene Nightshade (Inga). Margaret and Anne were so pleased when Minda qualified for Crufts and when Inga obtained her Gold Good Citizen award. Anne was Margaret’s carer for the last few years of her life, and she will miss her so much, as will all those who knew her over many years”. Thank you Roger.
On Friday May 15th Sarah Stonton travelled to Eyeworth Village Hall in Sandy Bedfordshire with Ch Arnscroft In Di Ana Jack RL2 L9 Ex for a SWUK Level 11 trial where he qualified in 4th place, thus far there are only 11 dogs that have qualified at L11 and 4 in L 12 which is the top level at the moment, so very well done.
Much further north the Scottish Kennel Club Double Championship show was held from 14-17th May, on the Royal Highland Showground, which is next to Edinburgh Airport. Pastoral and Toy Day was the Sunday. For many years it was an outdoor show until one year, when we were there very heavy rain over night flooded the showground, so it had to move indoors and ever since then it has been an indoor show, using the Highland, Lowland and Central Halls, the trade stands are all in one hall. We also used to also attend the Agility Show which still runs outside at the same time. In 2024 SKC decided to run their May All Breed Ch Show together with their October Ch show. This of course gives exhibitors an opportunity to compete in two Ch shows on the same day and with some breeds having 2 CCs on the same day, it has a great saving for the SKC for the hire of venue etc, it is unblenched but has chairs. Running two shows on the same days, using the same rings needs a great deal of organisation by the committee, not sure how they do it, as of course they also have groups for each show. A few classes start at 8.00am but most at 9am. We never had classes at the August show but now as it runs with the May show we do, although with a reduced classification compared with the May show which has veteran, good citizen and special beginners. The paper and online May schedule is in Blue with the October being in Yellow. They run it with the classes for both shows in the same ring we were in Ring 12 in the Highland Hall. Italian Greyhounds 21 first with an 8.30am start, followed by Hungarian Pulis 4 both October show, then Italian Greyhounds 23 again followed by Norwegian Buhunds 8 then Pulis 4 again all May show then Buhunds 8 again Oct show. Confused well with a numerically small breed the answer is find your ring and stay by it! For the order of judging leaflet, the May show classes are in Black and the October ones in Red. Think when it gets to the groups and stakes it is a bit more complicated so we will leave it there! Our judge for the May show was Fran Kaye who gives CCs in 27 breeds and last gave CCs in the breed in 2022 at Windsor. She found her DCC his 2nd & BOB in Cheryl and Paul Denham-Horton’s Tapui Haraldsson at Jjavacobe (Hogan), he is by NUCH Kimura’s Harald Harfagre x Ch Blackcombe Bodil At Tapuihe he also has 3RCCs .BV & RDCC his 19th he also has 24CCS Jacque & Michael Cobb & Nancy Kent Ch Koromandel Best Served Cold At Knytshall(Jamie), he is by Ch/Can Ch Kyon’s Bold Norseman x Ch MaidofCopper For Koromandel (Imp Fin). BCC her 3rd so winning her crown Jenny Shorer -Wheeler’s Sturtmoor’s Ffascination with Koromandel(Fable) she is by Ch Koromandel Best Served Cold At Knytshall x Sturtmoor’s Eezee Luvva .Fable has been fairly lightly shown her first CC was at Welsh Kennel in 2023 under Raye Parry her second in 2024 under Cath Moffat at National Working & Pastoral Breeds Ch Show she also has 5RCCs.This CC was Jenny’s 100 CC for dogs owned or bred by her. The judge for the non-CC show was Murray Armstrong who gives CCs in 72 breeds across 3 groups. He found his BOB & BB in Ollie Wheeler’s Ch Knytshall Thistle Ink It Up Koromandel. (Inky)RBB
Anne -Marie and David & Mary Taylor Ir Ch Frostisen Blakk Zitter (Penny) BD Mary & David Dosson’s Kimura’s Ola Normann (Ola) (Imp Nor). RBD Cheryl and Paul Denham-Horton’s Tapui Haraldsson at Jjavacobe (Hogan). BP Cheryl Denham-Horton’s Riverhund Kyon Where Shall I Wonder To Jjavacobe (Goose)(Imp). Penny was also 4th in the SKC Open Toy/Pastoral Stakes judged by Joe Smith winning £10 treat / fuel money depending on how Anne -Marie decides, seeing they were a long way from home. Later in the day Hogan was shortlisted in the May show Pastoral Group under Tim Ball, and it was once again good to have a representative in all the groups apart from special beginners. I love watching the groups online but with all the groups being prejudged it seemed a bit hectic, but the show finished at 6.45pm so well done SKC.
